Dialing in a monotub properly
    #26500127 - 02/23/20 03:51 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Please excuse and feel free to correct me on any misused terms or etiquette as I am new.

I am currently on the 5th day of colonization using Bod's easy AF monotub tek. I am trying to figure out what kind of indicators to look for when dialing in the tub for proper growing conditions.

There is an accurite hygrometer inside the tub that I try to keep reading between 90 and 99 percent RH and at around 70 degrees F. I read that during colonization that the surface of the substrate should be slightly dewy with minuscule water droplets which I have been keeping an eye on and misting accordingly. I have also seen many pictures with condensation on  the sides of the tub which I have not observed yet. I found that condensation on the sides leading up to the holes is an indicator of good FAE. Should I be concerned that I do not have condensation on the sides of the tub? There is also a dehumidifier running in the next room that must remain on. Would the dehumidifier noticeably affect the growing conditions? Also if there is anything that I am missing that I should be paying attention to or regulating please let me know.

Extra info:
-the monotub is in a closet that has a curtain for a door and a fan running
perpendicular to the closet's opening to promote FAE.

-substrate is bucket tek coir; 1:5 coir to water ratio

-spawn to coir ratio is 5 quart jars about 2/3rds full to 800 grams coir (or 4800 grams wet)

as close as you can get without your eyes getting wet

hygrometers aren't accurate inside a tub. if it was really 90-99%, nothing would evaporate. Just be patient.

Dehumidifier in another room shouldn't cause a problem. You shouldn't have to run a fan. Just leave door cracked.

Thanks for the advice and the link! I wish I had found it sooner. It cleared a few things up for me.

I had a feeling the hygrometer wouldn't accurately reflect what was going on at the substrate level. I'm assuming  it wouldn't be necessary to even have a thermometer in or even near the tub if I can guarantee a temp range of between 68 and 75 F. Just focus on misting when needed, being patient, and not overdoing anything.

Considering youre using an unmodified tub tek the fan is probably ok. Just dont allo w an abundance of air to flow around the tub or youll probably dry the sub out too quickly.

You can mist the walls of your tub to help raise the moisture content of the air inside the tub [humidity] if needed.

Dry air will obviously wick and evaporate moisture from your sub.

Yea as long as you're in the ballpark and can eyeball conditions on the surface, you shouldn't really need a hygrometer. More you run, better your eye will get.

I think my eyes got wet.

Tubs looking good for 5 days though, just stay patient. Nothing kills a tub like too much attention :mushroomgrow:

Yeah I think I may be okay with that. Putting my hand in front of the tub with how the fan is positioned, I don't feel a breeze. The curtain to the closet is flapping lazily, though. From what I've gathered, I think that's what I should be feeling.

I definitely need to dial down the attention. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I started this whole process.

Should be fine. Grows as easy as hair but a dry sub is like a bald headed man.
