Time-tested small scale PC automation pictorial
    #26500083 - 02/23/20 03:08 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Despite what I’ve read elsewhere, 15 psi as a requisite pressure does not appear to be necessary in my experience in sterilizing media for mushroom propagation. The process and device pictured below have been time-tested with continued success in sterilizing grain, agar and substrate at 11 psi. I use it regularly for jars, but works for mycobags as well. If you don’t have time to or simply don’t want to babysit your pc, I believe this is a viable alternative.

(In addition to the canner, an appliance timer is used to cut power to the canner following as this particular model continues to cook it’s contents by automatically entering ‘warming mode’ following the pc.)

Pictorial of steps and component for automating PC process using an 11 psi electric canner:

Here’s the canner, which I bought at Walmart for around $80 usd.

This model didn’t come with a stand, so I had to find something that would fit. That’s whats causing the rust you see. If I had to do it over again, I’d just line the bottom with washed out tuna cans with holes drilled in them, it that makes any sense. Anyway, 3/4 inch of water will do ya. I could run it through 2 or 3 PCs and it still wouldn’t be dry.

I’m cooking a bag of grain today for this pictorial.

There it is loaded in the PC.

I cover it with the tray that comes with the canner. I don’t use it when I’m doing jars, but it stops the mycobag from being sucked into the exhaust if I decide to manually depressurize the canner.

At this point, I just put on the lid and set the appliance timer for the extent of the cook.

i’ve had no problems cooking jars or mycobags for 1 hr 45 min. Anyway, hope this helps someone!
