I know
I was in a pretty dark depression for years. Fat, drunk, disinterested in almost everything... The past 2 years have been a roller coaster but I've finally gotten out of my own head and I'm in the best mental and physical shape of my life, and I'm ready to put myself out there again.
I've been chatting with this woman on OKcupid and we really hit it off. She's cute as hell too; half Brazilian/Portuguese.
We're gonna go out for some Greek food and see the Impractical Jokers movie. I'm actually pretty pumped. I forgot how awesome it feels getting ready for a date with a gorgeus chick who's into you.
Wish me luck!

Wow, what a night.
When I picked her up the conversation just flowed. Zero awkward silence, real connection. We started dinner, halfway through she asked about my one tattoo and that's where it took a turn.
I explained that it's a tattoo related to atheism. She's like you're an atheist? I'm like, "yes". Then all of the color drained from her face and she said something like, "Thaaaaat could be a problem."
I told her I'd rather not have that discussion on a first date but we danced around some of the topics and she said she has a close relationship with god and nobody can change that. I explained that I wasn't trying to, and that I'm against religion itself, not the people in it. She asked why I'm atheist and I explained it, and that my beliefs are rooted in evidence, and she said that her evidence was that her prayers have been answered before. I asked her if that was a pass for a test, what would a fail look like? How would she test that? And she replied that she would never test it, she just knows it in her heart.
That's where the date kind of dropped off, but we bounced back and went to the movie, (which was hot garbage BTW) and I dropped her off.
I texted her kind of saying I get it that she's bothered by my atheism and no hard feelings, I get it. But she replied saying that she felt like I kind of gave up at that point. So we talked it out and agreed it was a huge mis-communication and mixed signals, and we're totally down to see each other again. We're still texting right now and we'll probably go out again Friday.

You should play it safe and just talk politics on the second date...
Hey look at it like this, you two can have a massive disagreement and move on, avoiding throwing plates and other patrons over tables and through windows etc. That is a good sign.

Good story bro!
But I have gotten laid/offered sex on every first date. ( actually there were a few I didn't_)
NEVER EVER discuss religion, politics, or even sex.
Just wait, and usually she will go in for the kiss.
And when that happens just be slow, and don't over talk/over agress her sexually.
Then, MAKE SURE you actually want to have sex with her.
THat's my hold up usually because like she's fine and all that, but I really just want to be good friends and only fuck sometimes, but not tonight on the first date.
After that, it's more better.

I honestly wish I could give you better advice, but the only thing that works for me is diet and exercise. Especially cardio. Without it I'm a hot mess. I still regress sometimes back into it, but with a good diet and cardio it feels more like a passing storm and not my permanent atmosphere.

Science, everything spontaneously exploded into existence from nothing in an instant but the idea of a creator is dumb.
I’m not trying to argue I just think it’s funny.

That's not what science is saying at all. We can't even demonstrate that "nothing" is even possible. My response to the origin quesiton is, "I don't know.", which is 100% more honest than, "god did it" At least science is trying to consistently prove itself wrong in order to come up with the most accurate and honest explanation to something available.

I suspect the religion thing is going to keep being an issue, it coming up on the first date is actually a good thing, imagine if you had a dozen dates, really fell for her, and then it turned out to be a deal breaker.
I've noticed in my own conversations with atheists that a lot of them really don't understand religion, or religious people, they think they do, but they really don't. The exceptions are usually atheists who used to be religious, and they usually get along worse with religious folks than the atheists who don't understand them.
If you can accept that religion is important to her, that she isn't going to give it up, and that you aren't going to understand why it is important to her then you have a chance. If you think you can convert her, or if you think you can learn to understand why she is religious then you probably do not.
Good luck, it sounds like this is something you are really needing and it also sounds like you got along with her really well, aside from the religion thing.

Yeah she seemed more bothered by my atheism than I was by her religiousness. I definitely enjoy that discussion, it's just not suited for a first date. She's not like an activist pushing some kind of agenda, though, so it's one of those things that yeah I don't agree with but it's not exactly a deal breaker.

We're gonna go for a round 2 though. She appreciated that I even reached out afterward, she thought I'd written her off and I thought the same about her. We could've totally squashed it then if one of us had spoken up about it, and we both realize that now. So the communication wasn't exactly instant but it's there.

If your response is "I don't know", isn't agnosticism a better description for your worldview? Atheism is a belief just like theism.
BTW congrats on your first date in a long time. You still gonna hang out with her? Next time maybe try to build bridges and find common points instead of highlighting the differences.

Theism refers to belief, gnosticism refers to knowledge. Technically everyone is agnostic.

so people above the age of 15 still think atheism is cool in 2020? Have you ever considered agnosticism, or maybe just not labeling yourself as anything at all? or would you not get enough attention from others if you didnt do & say edgy shit?

Religion and politics should always be avoided at parties or dates, imo. Guess it's kind of hard if you have a tattoo though...
I'll only get one tattoo ever in my life. As it mirrors my own philosophy, which is absolute.

So you base your belief system on what's cool?

When I was a Christian I felt sorry for atheists going to hell and stuff. Always thought they must have experienced some kind of trauma.
I turned atheist for 'psychological freedom' or whatever, but I also turned super argumentative and kind of insensitive towards people who probably didn't deserve it.
Kind of difficult all this stuff if you just want to be an individual.

Very similar to my story. I spent a good amount of years bitter about my upbringing and resentful of religion in general. It wasn't long after finding psychedelics that my attitude shifted.
I also had an unusually unpleasant experience being sent away to a Christian work camp for bad kids and basically lost my youth to being brainwashed and shit so I would ssy I did endure some trama from that.

Yeah. Currently I think there are some cool shit going on behind the scenes, or some kind of force of nature, that is somewhat 'magical'. But I doubt it would be an 'ego' entity who punishes people for not believing in him/her.
It makes logical sense being a 'good person' though, since we are all living together.
Hope you figure this one out Newbie.

I really only bring it up if asked anymore. Someone being religious is not a deal breaker, only if they're forcing it on me or making me change my lifestyle is what would constitute an issue.

It’s also possible that there is a Christian God and through lessons we see displayed on earth on how unchecked power eventually ends up, we come to understand that God is a fuckin’ prick.

It's also possible that god is a 13 year old kid who spun up a copy of the new Sims game in his universe. I'm becoming ever more inclined to believe this shit in one form or another.

Sometimes you meet a chick on the bus, you get married, live happily every after, have 7 kids, and then get divorced on your wedding day. Sometimes taking the chance is worth the ride, just don't put your head under guillotine blade and expect a great outcome.

Honestly I'm excited to be back on the scene. I'm actually having fun, and my employees have been telling me I'm like a totally different person; walking straighter, head up, smiling more... Fuckin feels good, man.

endlessnessagain said: Atheism is a belief just like theism
Atheism is specifically a lack of belief in a deity. It doesn't describe belief in anything.
It's the belief in the lack of a deity, most people who identify as atheist are actually agnostic atheists, they will admit they don't know if there is a god or not, but they feel that lack of a god is the most reasonable assumption.
