Handling Caps While Printing
    #26499724 - 02/23/20 10:39 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Looking to print for the first time today. Reading a lot about using toothpicks and thumbtacks thru the cap for easier handling. Is this necessary? Seems like I want to avoid holding my hand over the cap if at all possible. Could I just use sterile tweezers to handle the cap by the edge or is it too heavy/floppy?

If not, could I push a toothpick thru BUT PARALLEL to the cap? So I have a handle away from the top?

Thx.

You can also get the metal kabob skewers and slide it horizontal through the cap about 1/4 from the top.

Honestly I make trash prints and just use my hands in the past. I'm curious what other people do. I need to get better and my sterile practice.

I've always used my hands and a pair of unsterile scissors off of the kitchen table. šŸ˜…  I just find a nice, flat, opened cap and snip it as close to the gills as possible.  Then I put it on a piece of unsterile foil and place a coffee mug on top for 24-48 hours. Voila.  In my opinion prints aren't really meant to be perfectly clean.  Hence agar.

Foil comes sterile in the roll.

Wear gloves, wiped with a good amount of 70% ISO, and you should be fine. Just be careful, use a SAB, and minimize direct contact.

I've done this several times before.  I likes this, actually... :awesomenod:
I've also used my hands like some kind of friggin ape before.  Toothpicks work ok.  You can play around and practice before you go live.  I'm moving on to wire racks...  Print a dozen at a time and just lift the rack.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Like Blink said: that's why we use agar.  Also, my new favorite pokey tool is a large upholstery needle.  The skewers aren't nearly as sharp and are fatter which can lead to flubs.

A large thumbtack might work pretty well. I usually just use gloved hands and pull the cap off gently or bare hands If Im feeling lazy

I've taken wild spores to start agar and not had contamination so it's quiet remarkable actually how little care is needed.

So any reasonable measures to keep sterility help but yes overthinking unless just awful technique is used.
