Cutting colonized substrate for side pins

Old thread above.  Rather than bump a 7 year thread I figure it would be better to start new.

It makes sense to me, cutting 2 inches off from the side of the substrate and fruiting off of the cut substrate.  It is easier to only have top pins, and less of a hassle, but why not try this  if you have side pins already?  Has anyone else tried this, and is it worth doing?

try tamping down the edges of your tub to aid with stopping side pinning

Assuming side pins are already occurring in a healthy tub, could cutting the substrate be viable, and possibly increase weight on the first flush? And possibly increase the fruiting area, as referenced in OP?
