White contamination or healthy mycelium? Pics included.
    #26498686 - 02/22/20 03:54 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Good afternoon! Noob here.

*This is my second attempt at MS on rye (PCed for 90-120 mins.) Noc’d 1/20 and shook at 30% on 2/12. Nearing 100% on 2/22.*

I can see lots of (what looks to me like) healthy myc, but I’m concerned there’s some other white molds/cobweb-like stuff growing in there that is all tangled up in the good stuff. Lots of dull white that is more stringy than wavy.

To those with more trained eyes than I, are these worth fruiting? Thank you in advance.

not an expert when it comes to white contaminations, but to me they look fine. it seems like they’ve colonized in the proper amount of days, & there’s definitely cube myc growing in there. i see what you’re saying about the lighter grey spots, but idk that you should be concerned. i think you’re good personally, but hopefully someone with more experience can chime in & confirm that. good luck w the grow!!

Thank you for the reply!

They smelled fine. I spawned four of the jars with coir and verm into four shoeboxes at 1:1 on 2/26. I’ll update with pics when I open the shoeboxes up. Some of the cultures that I put on agar look a little iffy - it’s not cobweb, but it’s wispy and thin and growing vertically - ring like, almost on top of the mycelium - in spots. I’m learning, I guess.

My last batch looked just like this, and trich (or some other green thing) made a fool of me.

Thanks again for the reassurance.

Opened 2 out 4 shoeboxes last night. Despite heavy condensation along the sides of the tote(s), the sub seemed/looked VERY dry: lots of dull white/grey stuff that was stringy and reaching upwards (more cotton ball than cobweb.) This is after a mist with city tap water.

In other news, after a couple of agar transfers, I think I’ve got a couple of decent cultures (seem to have gotten rid of the dull white/grey wispy stuff.) Should I transfer once more, or toss on grain?

The myc in that tub looks fine IMO. You should start seeing knots soon.

condensation is only an indication of temperature difference & not necessarily indicative of how wet or dry the sub is (as it sounds like you found out.) i still struggle with surface conditions too, they can be hard to dial in

your tub looks fine to me too, the fuzziness & reaching myc is probably just your sub wanting some more fresh air. you should be good

as for the agar transfers, idk. you could probably put that plate to grains & be fine but it also never hurts to do another transfer.

*UPDATE & PICS -  sorry all, hopefully my last bump. Thanks for looking over my shoulder and taking the time! I hope to one day return the favor.*

My coir/verm sub was definitely too dry when I spawned the jars. Regular, heavy misting (~ once a day) has become necessary. Ah well. Better too dry than too wet, from what I’ve gathered. Anywho. I haven’t found any outwardly visible/obvious contams yet**, other than the grey fuzz (NOT COBWEB) that a good mist seems to knock down. I should add, the grey fuzz has been far less present since the first pins formed.

All tubs seem to be pinning (side and bottom pins too!) Pins seem to be growing at all angles off of the sub - that is, very few are straight up and down/truly perpendicular to the sub’s surface.

**One tub may have a small spot of trich (hard to tell from pics), and if it does go green/sporulate, I’ll have successfully grown trich twice now and should be able to spot it in future grows!

PICS (3 different tubs):

Pins! Don’t want to grow upright, though.

Got an actual mushroom! Awfully small. Again, pins growing at odd angles.

Pins! Maybe trich in the back left corner. Powdery looking. Got my eyes on it.

Thank you for the input and reassurance! And I hope the pics help noobs like me. Thanks guys/gals!!
