hey everyone, i'm planning on doing my first bulk grow (and first time using agar too) sometime soon. i'm wondering what the best method for colonising grain spawn from agar cultures would be? and what are the drawbacks of the various methods? thanks!

If this is your first time I'd suggest limiting contamination vectors and simply slice up your plate and drop it direct to grain. This eliminates a lot of risk associated with doing LI or LC.

Get clean cultures on agar, cut wedges out, and drop them in grain jars(see the FAQ thread). Get those jars colonized and either spawn them or expand to more jars via grain-to-grain transfer.
None of this is going to be "fast" per se; expect 8-12 weeks if you don't have anything on agar yet. The cost with agar is a longer time frame and the payoff is better results and higher yield compared to PF Tek.

Where if you're alone, you know, you either come through it or you die, but in any case you avoid the fuss.'" - Terrence McKenna

Success should be the goal. Prioritizing speed is recipe for disaster.
That said, 9-10 days to 100% colonization could be expected from a grain to grain, although I'd recommend letting them sit a few days longer to really settle in.
Spawning to straight coir typically takes about 12-13 days until the first pins pop up and another 4-5 to first harvest in a 'shoebox.' 1 quart coir to 1 quart spawn. This is dependent on genetics, which you will have to work through trial and error. Don't worry too much if your experience differs. This stuff takes time and you really just have to be patient while they do their thing.
If you get weird colors or smells, don't hesitate to pitch it. Seriously, that stuff can get really gross really fast and does not make for good times. Much better to cut your losses and reevaluate your methods.
