Do Shrooms Help with Depression & IBS
    #26466533 - 02/03/20 09:40 AM (4 years, 13 days ago)

Hi Everyone,

I just wondered if anyone else in this community has had success using magic mushrooms to treat their depression and IBS-A, Like most people i have too many issues to go into my depression but for 3-4 years now i have been suffering with bowel issues the doctors have proven useless (it must be IBS caused by depression was the diagnosis) i'm living on antibiotics on/off and various IBS medicine such as Mebeverine which has little to no relief i have been offered SRII's as it is proven to help with IBS but the side effects don't feel worth it. i have read that serotonin regulation can provide great relief for people such as myself, i have done mass research on Psilocybin and depression but then it dawned on me could this also help with my IBS as it has taken over my life.

Any advice would really be appreciated

Regards
Si

There is very little to no information that has been proven for either of those afflictions to be treated by mushrooms.  Psychedelics being used is a new thing and only just beginning to be studied.  It's not something you would want to attempt on your own as all the therapies with them generally also have psychtherapy involved as well.  It could be dangerous to attempt solo if you are depressed.

You should continue to seek medical help for your depression first and if all else fails, look into a ketamine treatment program.  They are new and have shown effective for stubborn medication resistant depression.

Sorry, but haven't the Johns Hopkins studies proven that even a small dose of psilocybin can have lasting effects when it comes to keeping depression at bay?

Ketamine treatment is roughly $500 per session.

There have been a lot of blown up articles taking studies out of context, with small sample sizes and specific environments and making them out to be like some new miracle drug has been discovered, leading tons of people to come here askiing "can I just eat some shrooms and all of the sudden get better?"  Do you think in those studies they did that they just gave someone an 1/8th and sent them home to trip alone?

The answer is no.  Mental illness is such a complex thing and without proper guidance and care before, during and after, it could lead to far worse issues.  Feel free to look at the posts in this forum where people are having PTSD symptoms weeks after if you need an example.

There is inherent risk, especially for those who are not mentally stable.  This is the same reason I said to look into ketamine treatment programs and not to just go buy some ketamine off the street and K-hole at home.

Hi, shrooms don't help with IBS, they will make it worse, I know from experience.

Edible Marijuana will help with IBS, it is an ingredient in ayurvedic herbal mix for IBS related symptoms.

I'm new to all this, so take my words with a grain of salt.

Shrooms do seem to be capable of helping with depression. I didn't find my first trip helped, I just had fun that first time, and the trips themselves certainly didn't fix depression for me. All the thought I've put into my experiences after tripping (3 total so far) HAS helped me and I feel the least depressed I have been in probably a decade. As mndfreeze said though, the trips being studied aren't the same as the trips you do at home. Those people are getting therapy/guidance while tripping, and help with integration afterwards. The integration is very important if you're hoping for a therapeutic experience.

As for IBS, I think you're going to want to look into things that help with inflammation. I have arthritis from a traumatic injury, which is also an inflammatory disease. To reduce symptoms, look into inflammation treatments. I personally have had a lot of luck with ginger tea (brewed from fresh ginger root, not tea bags, for the strongest effect) and cutting out starches and sugars.

Ginger hasn't been shown to help with IBS directly, but it can modulate your inflammatory gene expression, so it could be worth trying for a few weeks. I make ginger tea by boiling 1" ginger root per cup of water for about 15 minutes, then remove from heat and brew that water with whatever other tea I want for extra flavor (usually green or chai spice). To have an effect, you will have to try it daily for 4-8 weeks, then evaluate if it has helped. Making it with ginger root is very cheap, but you can also get ginger supplements if you don't like the flavor.

CBD is also very helpful, and most people find that CBD works best if there's at least some THC with it to get the entourage effects.

I'm also new to all this, I've been researching 6+ hrs per day since November since I first read the John Hopkins studies.

If you are considering psychedelics to aid you depression recovery all I can suggest is you do a LOT of research so you know exactly what you are getting into.

First get psycho-educated, understand possible causes for your depression, one of the most common causes is an accumilation of stress on top of/due to chilhood trauma (now getting recognised as C-CPTSD) I can highly recomend 'Complex PTSD from surviving to thriving' by Pete Walker.

It's rare to find anyone that doesn't carry some childhood trauma experience, so I doubt the book would be of zero use even if CPTSD is not the actual cause of your depression. If you get anxiety in certain situations or get triggered by words in conversation/certain attitudes of certain people, these triggers are clues to the source your subconscious is holding onto since early childhood. Mindfulness meditation will help (lots of guided meditation stuff on youtube) Inner child work can help heal these wounds (see Wu Wei on youtube) also shadow work (learning to recognise and master your subconscious traits) I also found Lectures by psychologists such as Jordan Peterson, Dr. Grande (on youtube) very useful. Also see talks by enlightened folks like Eckhart Tolle, and Peter Crone.

Once you have a foundation psycological education, and some practice with mindful meditation, you are much less likely to be surprised or frightened by the deep connection to your subconcious psychedelics can provide.

Next study the psychedelic experience it's self, beside the may youtube psychedelic channels, I can highly recomend "The Psychedelic Explorers Guide - Safe theraputic and sacred journeys" By James Fadiman, also Timothy Learys book "The Psychedelic Experience A Manual Based On The Tibetan Book Of The Dead" (available free online) The former highlights the importance of 'Set & Setting'. Set refers to mindset, are you mentally strong/psycho-educated enough to face monster from the id without freaking out; Setting is more about creating a safe releaxing atmosphere, with a very a stong emphasis on an experienced guide/trip sitter to help you though the experience at time of stuggle, get any of this wrong and you could end up with an extremely bad trip leading you into a far worse state of mind, and even if everything is prepared perfectly there are still rare cases of psychosis in controlled thearaputic settings, so it's not something to be taken lightly.

That said, also look for Lectures by Bruce Lipton on epigenetics & the power of the subconcious mind, he provides further insight as to how your IBS could well be a direct symptom of your depression, when the body is stressed into 'freeze/fight/flight' mode it surpresses your immune system, limits bloodflow to, and stops digestion to preserve energy for what the body percieves as a comming fight for your life.

I hope that provides some food for thought and helpful references to help you on your path. Good Luck!

San
