My wbs is making trash jars, why?
    #26497021 - 02/21/20 01:48 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I'm doing a no soak no simmer tek I found that seemed trustworthy, I did a batch a week or so ago, it worked out ok, now I'm trying it again and I've gone through 9 batches now and gotten all trash on them.  The jars are turning into solid cakes at the bottom, the grain feels kind of sticky when I'm cleaning the failed jars out, I'm shaking them when the water is still nearly boiling to try and get them when they might be ok hoping the wouldnt solidify that quickly.  Does anyone have a recommendation on where to start with trouble shooting?  Less water in the jars?  More?  Lower hear?  More/less water in the PC?  Different seed with less cracked corn pieces and de shelled sunflower seeds?

Do you rinse the shit out of it first? WBS is appalling. A lot of grains tend to stick when not rinsed. I even add a drop of soap when washing my grain.

When I look at WBS at the store there are an incredible number of options and they vary wildly between components and price.  Is there a certain brand or component (millet or whatever) you suggest?  Is the soap cleanse recommended regardless or only for certain products?

:whathesaid: except I rinse mine after I hydrate and i dont use soap. Make sure youre shaking your jars after you pc them and they're still hot.

too much water. when I do flash preps for was I go by volume so 1.5 cups of grain per jar and slightly under 3/4's cup of water. if you keep getting the starchy goopy mess you can bring it up to pressure for ten minutes and shut the heat off and once pressure has dropped shake the jars up and start your cycle but you will still want to shake your jars once finished.
the problem with these preps is dirty and often starchy grain and this slower colonizing and being a bitch to break up and even more of a pita at g2g, can also only do 7 reliably at a time as they need to be upright in the pc

Thanks for the water tip, the tek I was going off said 2 cups grain to 1 cup liquid. Half cup coffee half distilled water.  I will try the pre cycle heat and shake,  I'm shaking them as soon as the pressure valve drops on the pc, I throw on oven gloves, and shake the shit out of them while the liquid in the pot is still a hair away from boiling. I've scalded myself a few times now trying to shake the second I can get my hands on them, so I dont think it's a matter of waiting to shake.
I've cut out the coffee,  I'm going to make another test jar tonight with your specs cronicr. I dont plan on doing g2g since I've heard wbs is a bitch with that, and instead plan on just making 75 jars from agar and using what I can that way.  More work, but I feel like it's more reliable for a noob that way.
I want to get to bigger, easier grain soon. Any recommendation on rye vs whole oats? I've heard oats described as the peak of grain for spawn, but I've also heard that rye is more noob friendly.

This is going to be the dumbest question I've asked on here I think, but how do you guys wash your grain without it turning into a mess worse than glitter?  I tried washing a few batches of bird seed and the tiny millet got wet and tacky and stuck to everything, and it would transfer from surface to surface. I'm still finding it all over everything.  How can I wash like 10lbs of bird seed effectively?

i like rye and as for washing grain I simply use a 5 gallon bucket with no holes

How do you drain the grain...(mash?) properly?  I'm thinking of getting a pillowcase and using that to wring out the water or something so I dont end up with a sink full of grain.  I already need to take off and clean my garbage disposal from a couple mishaps.  That or a bacon splatter screen thing maybe
Sorry for the dumb question lol.  When it comes to sifting, I actually found a way to make it a breeze by using quart jars with metal lids that have a ton of 3/16 holes in the top as shakers.  Me and my buddies had a get together day of sifting through a couple 5 gallon buckets of seed prepping it all, super quick and easy to see progress and keep the trash buildup to a minimum

You can add a dash of pickling lime to the pot you are rinsing the wbs in. Id even put a dash in your pot of wbs. Run warm water over it while blasting with the sink sprayer if you have one. That helps force off a lot of the shit. Then let it sit for maybe 5 minutes so it cleans the goo off. Let it strain.  It helps get the gunk off.

I prefer foomans wbs tek. Boiled water bath. I use pickling lime in that. Ive tried 20 different what people call “no prep teks” in the past and never had consistent results. And it’s not no prep. This is the way mycologists have prepped grain forever. Cal it no prep if you want. It’s the way everyone used to prep grain. Yeah it’s not “no prep” but it’s consistent and has worked 100% for me for 10 plus years.

Sometimes wbs moisture content gets unevenly distributed. After your pc cycle wait until the pc has cooled enough where you can touch it, but it’s still warm. I generally give them a shake to redistribute the wbs moisture evenly around the jar. You can also wait until morning when they are cool. But I usually do this warm or next morning. Make sure you have a good enough lid though. I use sfd lids siliconed on.

sounds like your seed should be dried out better - seems like they are too wet causing the caking at bottom of jar

Soaking and simmering is a really important part of the process if you're using WBS. For contamination issues, simmering before you put your WBS in your PC will help germinate some of the endospores that will then be killed during pressure cooking.

Soaking will absorb some water, but the simmering will bring that WBS to full field capacity.

Can I ask what non soak and simmer tek you're using?

soaking and simmering has nothing to do with endospores. we pc to kill endospores we soak and simmer to soften, hydrate and dry.soakimg softens the grain helping to limit burst kernels, simmer can ensure nice plump grains and helps steam dry them but the pc is gonna kill the endospores, the old " letting them germinate " myth was a bust before it was even a thing, once they hatch they aren't endospores they are just bacteria which make more endospores
soaking softens the grain
