Hairless or no?

On my way home today I spotted a large patch of poppies on the side of the road... Upon further inspection I notcied that the stems had hairs... (1) Are P. Somniferum stems hairless? (2) How can one tell the difference between P. Somniferum and other species of the Papaver genus.

thats not exactly true. sometimes p. somniferum can have some little hairs. i just came across some as well with a few hairs and they were p. somiferum.
i have also seen lots of pictures over at poppies.org with p.somni's having hairs on their stems.

P.S. stems, like many plants, may have hair on the stem. Click here to see a P.S. in the hook stage; although the photo is not great quality it appears to have hair on the stem. **edit: if you did find a patch of P.S. I envy you! Before you harvest any, make sure that they are mature, i.e., petals have dropped and the crown has just turned up. Also, don't let anyone see you harvest.

is there another way to tell the difference other than usually not hairy?
i've had some trouble coming up with good ID comparisions between somniferum and other poppies in my research...
thanks!

opium poppies are pretty easy to ID. The leaves are different from all the other poppies I've seen, in shape and the bluish green color they have, the pods are distinctive too. FWIW, I've seen p. soms with flower stalks that were slightly hairy and others that were bare... poppies.org FAQ entry pics of various species of papaver DH

thanks for the link!
so correct me if i'm wrong, but what's different about an opium poppy leaf is that it is more smooth, not as spikey?
thanks!

yeah, the leaves are smooth, I've never seen a p. som with leaves that I would call spiky. They might have little hairs on the bottom of the leaf veins sometimes, but nothing realy prickly like Argemone mexicana... http://opium.poppies.org/gallery/details.php?image_id=64&s=e39207ed92a7d344cea619bb16a187ef those are textbook opium poppies, if you look in the lower right you'll see some flower stalks with spikes/hairs. Notice the bluish-green foliage and the leaf shape/arrangement. http://opium.poppies.org/gallery/details.php?image_id=99&s=e6617c4b43d9b2379c10a62ba824b259 As long as they have leaves/flowers/pods like those you can't really go wrong. Once you see some up close they're really easy to tell apart from the others. I think there's some in the medicinal herb garden at school , at least there was a couple years back, haven't checked this year, I imagine they're a ways from flowering yet but they should be labeled... The pod is distinctive, note the crown in some of the links to photos posted by DH. I believe that only the opium poppy has a crown.

check them out once they've started to flower, the amount of hairs should subside.
