Wheat MEA vs Light MEA?

It appears that none of the stores in my city have light dry malt extract at the moment. I can get dark or wheat but not light.

I just started using agar and I am currently using PDA but I thought it would be good to experiment with MEA too.

Should I only buy light or would wheat/dark work okay too? Thanks!

I'm not an expert but the other malts should be okay to use. All the same nutrients should be available. Where did you look for the light malt extract? I had the same trouble finding it until I stumbled across it in the beer brewing section of the local super markets.

I called all the brewing places in my city and they usually have it but everyone is out and they don't know when they are getting more. I've never seen a brewing section in a supermarket here. There is a malt only place here but you have to order huge amounts. I might just order from an online brewing supplies place but I didn't want to pay for shipping. Haha.

Light, amber, extra light, pilsen, wheat, rye, and even the dark extracts will all work well.

Thanks Bod!!! It's great to have an expert opinion like yours! I might pick up some wheat malt extract and give it a try.

I picked up some nutrional yeast today and I was going to make some PDYA tonight but maybe I will wait til tomorrow.

After I run through premix agar I have, I want to try sorghum malt extract to make agar plates. The amino acid content looks nice.

Interesting. I saw some of that at the health food store in my search for various materials.

I got some wheat malt the other day and later realized it expired last year. I don't think the expiration should matter much in this situation as it is more of a "best before" for brewing.

I made some oatmeal (flour & rolled oats) malt yeast agar (OMYA/OFMYA) last night and I am going to do some transfers today to see how it works out. There aren't many good write-ups about it so if it turns out good, I will share exactly what I did. For some reason 2 out of 12 jars cracked along the bottom in the sterilization or during cooling. They aren't cracked open so I just tossed them in the fridge to store them for now.
