Might be beating a dead horse but... G. luteofolius?
    #26494031 - 02/19/20 08:12 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Habitat: wood chip landscaping, Monterey, CA.  I thought little of this species at the moment of encounter, but I did take some shots.  My bike partner, my wife, was... way ahead of me.

Spore print color:  Kinda obvious.

Other information: Shoulda scratched and sniffed, but FAILED.

Agreed that it's Gymnopilus. I'd just be guessing to say something like G. luteofolius or G. thiersii.

I can’t quote it directly but on a previous observation I had, Alan R. explained the major difference is region and substrate. Most west coast G. luteofolius are likely thiersii, Major differences being the substrate and regional diversity(?). Thiersii was originally observed on softwoods in the Bay Area, type specimen for luteofolius was found in like upstate New York on a hardwood.

I think that was the gist of it.

Gymnopilus thiersii or G. dilepis.  If it has capitate cheilocystidia it's the former, if the cheilocystidia doesn't have swollen apices it's the latter.

Alan,  isn't  G. thiersii western in distribution or is it widespread in North America?
