First time grower needs help<< 1

Hey guys first post of my own, been lurking little over a year, and decided with all the research and passion I felt it was time to embark on this little journey myself.
I have read so much and tried to accurately gain the most useful information, but there is so much information out there you know? And I still have what I feel like are silly questions but here we go...
I’ve decided that Rye seed is what I felt comfortable using, the questions I’m running into already are all the different lid teks. I wanted to use Bods Polyfil lid tek, but is that all really to it? I will of course foil the lids before PCing, but that’s it right?
With Bods Polyfil lid tek do I need a layer of dry Verm over my Rye or not? I prefer not to do the dry Verm, but I just need some clarification, to much reading and too many threads deep have confused me.
Thanks you in advance to the community!!

Let's if I know your answers. I started recently from a similar spot.

Thanks Wizard! I’m really hoping to find my groove and start sharing what I’ve got with everyone, the clarification is what I needed. I’m doing my lids now, got my rye soaked, and area cleaned and prepped, and I’m continuing on my journey..I’ll update later with more info, don’t be strangers!!

I guess it really depends on what you're doing. If you're going to be doing a lot of grain to grain transfers, I would recommend going with the plastic screw on lids. I bought a 12-pack of S.F.D's and cut out 80 quarter sized pieces. I then drilled 3 - 1/16" holes in the plastic lid, used sandpaper to scruff up the lid, the used RTV gasket maker to seal the filters to the lids. It might me more expensive, but it's less messy, reusable, and less of a hassle to do grain to grain transfers. I still put foil over these when I P.C.

There is a tutorial on shoomery I followed, just cant remember witch one, it's pretty straight forward though

No prob, I'm doing different TEKs, but I researched everything you're doing. I was looking for rye, but I found oats. So oats it was.
I also did 2 holes in the lid, and cut (coffee can size) circles out of a tyvek suit. I'm going to go to SFDs eventually.
EDIT: I am also going to go plastic lids when I go SFD. I'm planning on LI, so it's not as necessary, but I like the single piece.
Here's my stuff as of a few days ago. Well the current stuff, I have the bottom of a 66at filled with old plates I'm done with.

The leftmost jar is very near 100% as of last night. I plan to fruit all these jars in vitro.

You can buy 12 SFDs for $22 on amazon. I recieved then the next day. RR has a great tek on different style filter lids for jars. I believe it's in the grain tek video. Hope you figured it out, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Keep in mind rye seed and rye berries are different things. Almost everyone uses rye berries. Heads up.

Rye grass seed will work as well but the soak and prep is a bit different. Violet has some great write ups on it. I can't believe SFD's are 12 for 22 bucks now. Jesus Im getting old, and inflation is a bitch.
Alot of people use plastic lids, I have not had great success with them. They do not seal as well as metal. I do however still use plastic lids, but I don't make a Gas Exchange area in them anymore because they do not seal well anyway. I just inoculate and leave them a 1/4 turn loose, unless I am going to shake and then I will tighten them shake and loosen them.
The thing I like about Rye seed is that if you have the correct measurements you can skip the soak and do a dry seed/ add water and PC. But that is something I think I remember Violet creating.

That's why I wanted rye at first. I found oats super cheap, so that was that.

You're saying we can't mention Amazon? That doesn't sound right. I thought that was about spore vendors.

Tedoro, I was going to try bods easy af tek lid where he just leaves the lids 1/4 turn loose. I didn't really see any other people doing it so I wasn't sure of the success. If its working for you also I probably will just do that from now on. Anyone else try this?? Is your success rate still the same?

I pay 67$ for 100 pounds of rye berries in the midwest. What does everyone else pay?

The dry verm layer is for PF Tek only. U dont need it for grains. The polyfill lids do the filtering.
I recommend getting synthetic filter discs for grain jars. They are very easy to use, no lid modifying required.
Glad u joined the conversation. Welcome to the Shroomery!

I have a hard time growing... so I can only respond to what I read. Lots of folks are trying "unmodified", unsure if it's considered more beginner than another.

$13.99 + tax for 50 lbs, so $30 for 100 lbs.
