Agar for contamination filtering - how far do I go?

I've been reading threads for days so I won't be such a pest with too many questions but I could really use a bit of clarification on this topic. I have grown 8 tubs so far. Half have been awesome and half have failed due to contamination.
I'm ready to start agar culturing. My main concern right now is avoiding contamination. I will move on to mycelium chasing and cloning once I am comfortable with consistency.
A lot of what I read about agar and strain isolation seems to involve the culturing of exponential numbers of plates. RogerRabbit's video talks about isolating 40 strains and growing ALL of them in pursuit of good fruit, which sounds like a great time but is beyond my immediate goals.
What if I just want to get contamination free mycelium from an online-purchased syringe? How far into the isolation procedure should I go? And, assuming I'm not going to pursue all sectors, which ones should I prioritize? The fastest growing? Am I looking for an isolated strain at this point or just a clean plate without contaminants?
Thanks!

It depends on a ton of factors, from what I've seen here it seems like you can put a fully colonized agar plate to spawn as long as there are no contams. I've seen posters get clean myc with no transfers, or one to two. And I've seen people transfer until they have one definite monoculture. I feel like you get a lot of choices when you start using agar. As far as what types of traits you want, agar seems to give you that choice, you can isolate whatever strain pleases you most. whether you want to clone the biggest fruits, or isolate the most rhizomorphic aggressive strain, you can do either.

You are just trying to clean up the culture. At most should take a few plates.
I did this one recently..
Germ plate
Took a transfer from a fast leading edge
Let it grow a few days..

Took 2 sperate transfers..
 These are good for grains.
Worry about isolation and shit later. Took 3 transfers including germ plate to get nice cultures. Easy shit man.

Focus on clean cultures, and then fast cultures, in that order. Forget about most things said in videos or posts older than 5 years. You'll get ahead fastest if you read the most popular threads today and ask questions. But if you went to far as to for example read an entire thread from start to finish, you'd not only gain immensely firm understanding of the intricacies, you'd on top of that advance rapidly in your overall understanding of the processes. All the questions you have and those you didn't even know you have yet will be answered if you read bods unmodified fruiting chamber Tek from start to finish. The amount of time that takes will still fade in comparison to the time spent wondering how to even describe your issues or understa ding them or correcting them. So much time saved just by reading up for a half day. Trust me

Thanks Mateah. I agree but when you aren't too familiar with the forum narrowing it down to which threads will get you there is daunting. I have read Bod's unmodified monotub Tek. Didn't realize there were 20 pages of followup discussion! I will read it. Thanks for pointing me back in that direction.

Thank you Mushboy, that is very helpful!
A couple more quick questions if you don't mind:
1) preferred temperature for growing cultures?
2) preferred method of inoculation from agar?

If you skim through the "getting started" thread at the top in my signature, then you'll accelerate even faster and get even more questions answered so you don't have to wait for 12h to get a reply like "always grow mushrooms at room temp at every stage" and for growing/inoculation methods using agar basically all you need is the links in my sig (the links in my sig will lead you to other very useful links, there's a ton of them hehe so I just include those that will lead you to salvation)

Uhh, make that 183 pages! Good stuff though. Trudging through it now. So far nothing about agar.

Wait so i was just deciding on instead of transferring, inoculating with a wedge and then taking a clone is it worth it to try and isolate rhizo growth

There is also a link there to the list of agar teks. The one at the top of that is a good place to start and it covers how to inoculate grain with agar.
