I have an acquaintance recently utter the oft-used, completely misquoted aphorism that 'well, the plural of ancedote isn't data." I had heard it before, but hadn't thought much of it except simply knowing it felt wrong. This time, however, I finally replied "actually that's completely wrong. Where do you think data comes from? What do you think it is? In so many cases, the plural of anecdote IS, in fact, data"
He couldn't believe this, so he googled it to correct me. Turns out, the original quote WAS "The plural of anecdote is data" and somehow over the years it morphed into its exact opposite, to the chagrin of the poor professor who first uttered it.
Thought you all might enjoy this!
Edit: Are Anno and those folks still around? Ive been away for a few .... several ... lots of years!
