Need help Identifying correct Mycelium smell

how exactly should healthy cubensis Mycelium smell? A month or so ago I had a batch of BFR cakes get a bacterial infection from too much water and smell pungent and terrible, and now I think I have an instinctual disgust response to cubensis spawn. visual inspection of the spawn shows nothing wrong, but I need to know if my sense of smell is still traumatized, or if there indeed is a contamination problem.

It should be a pretty fresh and clean type of smell
"Mushroomy" is the best word to describe it , smells just like most edible mushrooms
you could go into a shop that sells shrooms and sniff them a bit =]

the sample smelled like mushrooms, but a little funky. what kinds of common bacteria would there be, and what telltale types of smalls should I look out for? it doesn't smell sweet, sour, like rotting food
the shoebox I spawned into smells like coco, since that's what the top layer is. it's growing really fast compared to my first 3, no visible contams yet

There's so many different things that can end up contaminating the mycelium that it's hard to tell exactly what types of smells to look out for, but usually contam smells borderline bad
I think if you grow enough mushrooms you'll eventually develop a nose for it

Sounds like you're working with healthy mycelium to me, I'll keep my fingers crossed for your grow:D

It's 2020, why can't we upload smells yet?
Have you thought about trying agar out? You could make sure your stuff's clean before you 'noc up your spawn.

it's not very expensive, i got started with the equivalent of about 30-40 usd and some of the ingredients i use for it i bought in bulk (2 kg of dextrose will probably last me a lifetime) however if you try agar you will need a proper SAB if you don't already have one and that might add like another 50 bucks, maybe less depending on how big or small you want to make it

I'm guessing the SAB is so the whole agar plate doesn't get contaminated? I've just been doing grain spawn bags/PF Tek/Uncle Ben's without one, to good effect so far

yes
with all these beginner oriented teks like pf you don't really need to use one, with agar it's a must
if you're only growing mushrooms for personal use there's no need for using agar, it's more of a large scale growers/hobbyists thing as it adds quite a bit of extra work to the whole process

I was just saying b/c it seems you've been going like 5 months and not had success from your posts. I'm 35 days in starting with agar, and looking to have a few mushrooms in less than 2 weeks.
My SAB was 15$, including the soldering iron i bought to make the holes for my arms. You can make agar with glad mini rounds (8 for 3$), grain soak water (11$ 40# bag of oats), and agar agar (2.50 a packet from Asian groceries), so around 20$. Then it's just jars and tubs, which you might already have stuff that works.
Took this today:
