Unusual Jobs That Pay Well?

What are jobs in your area that are unusual that pay well?
Working high up on the the George Washington Bridge would be crazy, but if you're comfortable with it, you'd get paid well.

I worked on oil rig in Pennsylvania. Made 1200 a week. That was through a temp service.

Unfortunately I only have experience with unusual jobs that don't pay well.
The weirdest job I've had was sitting by photocopiers at various schools and making records about what everyone copied. I never met the people who hired me either.

Being an electrician can be pretty unusual at times and it pays really well, especially if you are good.
Sometimes I think about getting a job driving one of our Subway trains. It pays really well and is probably super easy. I think the trains are pretty much automated and run themselves now. I could just do it on the weekends and sit back and play Nintendo Switch. Once in a while I would announce the stops and remind people not to make poopies on the train seats.
I invented a new job earlier. It is fishing with magnets which is already pretty popular for lakes and streams. My twist would be to magnet fish in the ghetto storm drains and sewers. I would find murder guns, knifes, and other metal contraband to sell to the police or resell on the streets.

rope access technicians can get paid a lot for risky jobs but to get to the cool jobs you need to have a few years of experience
it's a pretty fun job too (if you're not scared of heights )

Cleaning out portapoties with the honey wagon can get you like $60/hr if you don't mind breathing through your mouth. Even more if you buy your own truck.

English classes in non-english speaking countries, I met an Aussie who immigrated that was making almost as much as I was as a jr. software security engineer
Apparently you can get a flight, food, accommodations and a decent salary teaching English in Korea.
Tree planters in Canada apparently make great cash, but it's grueling work.

I caught word that those english lessons can be done online so you never even have to leave your house. I can’t remember where I heard it but I remember the money they were making made me really wish I could speak some sort of asian. Apparently you just ‘facetime’ with whoever and then bill them by the hour or however you figure it.
That seems like a good gig.

We have some guys working in Chicago running a type of concrete demolition equipment and they get $95 an hour, and the job is 50 hour weeks. So before taxes you're looking at $4500 a week.

Technically yeah, but factor in the required insurance, the permits, the maintenance costs, the cost of the machine, the payroll, the everything. So it's lot like a cool $4500 in profit every week. Which is doable in some other trades.

Hope it holds true with Spanish speaking people, it'd be dope to be able to work at home. Then again, I've never taught English, so I wouldn't know where to start!

You're confused. The guys who are working there literally earn $95 an hour and work 50 hour weeks. None of that other shit applies to them, because they are employees, not the business owners.

Woah brah. Sorry I offended you with my confusion.
250k a year to operate simple machinery. They're probably lying or not being honest with you about their pay, which is a super common thing people lie about. People lie to themselves about how much they make, to make themselves feel better.

Bro. I’m not offended, but you should stop talking about things you don’t understand. These employees are union, and the union rate is $95 an hour. How do I know the rate is real? I’m in management and we have to submit the certified payroll to the union to prove they are being paid correctly. Certified payroll is certified by a third party, not our company, not the union. When the union approved the payroll pay is released by the third party.

Rare for union workers to ever get close to even 100k

Nobody said they make $250k a year, that’s you making things up. I said they make $95 an hour for 50 hours a week. And that’s absolutely the union rate. Like many construction jobs they are very hit and miss and can be rather seasonal. So what they make annually is quite dependent on the quantity of work.

And for the record, we had the same crew running in Manhattan last year and they made $103 an hour there. Big city union rates can astronomical, especially in niche fields.

I am a coal miner and I made $110,000 last year. I load coal trains that are sent to the power plant. Also, monitor gauges and flip switches.... very easy. No under ground work. There are heavy equipment operators who have a more dangerous job, but still not under ground.

In my area a really good general electrician can make $60 to $85 and that is not union. If you're specialized you can make even more. Plumbers, masons, and some other trades make much more. $95 isn't unheard of, especially in a big city.

Gotta feed the kids and keep them in clothes before you can worry about the environment. This is the fact that western countries don't understand about why the rainforest gets logged and cleared for farm land and why unsustainable development will continue.

I met the executive coach for the VP of the company I work for today. I'd say that's pretty fucking strange. As far as I can tell, all she does is convince the VP, who's actually an amazingly intelligent, and genuinely caring woman, that she's shit and needs to be better.

And you live off the grid I hope...
I understand that clearing forests for cattle is not good. Nor is over fishing already depleted fisheries.
But who will stand up and say, "Me, my family and my country will not eat"
Easy to speak out of ones ass, but the issue is a little deeper and more complicated than telling everyone else to go without. Whilst you drive what ever you want fly away on vacations and take the electric train to work.

What you want a public apology?
You gonna vote for Bernie Sanders too? Representing the far east motherfuckers...!!
You gonna insist that the person who said I am destroying the Earth apologize?
Pretty convenient that he had his phone on him to snap that photo to rebut my claim...?! Haha...
He probably is making lattes for the men you erect those. Asked one of them to send him a picture...

Hate to think your guys day is going to be ruined.
Maybe he can unchain himself from his tree, and demand an apology.

I am a coal miner, now that's common knowledge....
Thread was about high paying jobs, not tearing down someone's profession.
Ok to fuck with me cause I am a miner. Easy target.
But Ahab is golden... Like I said let's see what other kinds of high paying jobs are out there.
We can discuss climate change and my carbon footprint another day

Your job actually seems cool. By loading you mean scooping coal with a bulldozer? Discovery channel Gold Rush style?
I am in c-suite level management at an innovative med-tech company in scale-up phase. Make €66.000 a year working 36 hours/week, but still at the early stages of my career. Been working a real job for 5 years only.
Took my time (almost 12 years) getting high and various degrees

Nice... I actually work right on the train tracks in a tipple. Load about 100 cars with 105 tons on each car.
But that is only about 1 or 2 hours a day.
Most of time we run coal into the plant into silos, sample the coal so when we load trains we know what we are putting into them.
Kinda a cool job. That picture was from the pit uncovering the coal. If you zoom in you can see 100 ton trucks. Driving atop the coal seam.

It is literally unreal the amount of money you can make. People want bedbugs gone. Like yesterday. There isn’t many people who aren’t straight up con men that will actually get em so if we do a nice house or apt building it’s a lot of $$$

It’s funny because part of our pitch caters to earth loving all natural hippy types by saying we use essential oils and no poison. We can use a blend with no prometherin but the reality is that the bugs will not die as reliably without massive amounts of it applied to their “hidey spots”

The way it's done around here, is they come in with special heaters designed not to burn your house down or melt paint off your walls, but it's still happened. And you have to either hire movers to off your stuff and clear your house out for the most part. And your furnature is pretty much toast. I do moving work for people on the side renting out uhauls but that job def coincides with bed bug removal if one were to get into both areas. The multimillion doller idea is whoever comes up with the TRUE easier enviromental friendly method or product. Like a magnetic frequecy that makes them all eat themselves. Or some kind of active mycelium that will omit a spores that targets their colonies

Research is being done to invent a technology that restricts them from reproducing eletronically or something. It’s over my head it’s all higher university research right now. Also a gas machine that administers lethal concentrations of chlorine dioxide is in the works Just so we don’t gotta mix up the chems ourselves. And set off the reaction. It’s kinda nerve wracking at first. The molecules of chlorine trigger the carbon alarm and the whole building usually wants to know whatup
We use steam to avoid having to ruin furniture because it’s true that sometimes you can’t dose or gas a super infested dresser enough

So, the only thing I do not like about windmills is basically it is set up and forget. No long term jobs. Here in china, with coal plants going up at a fast pace, not only miners power plants are prospering, but especially here in the far east, everything is made here. So the vendors from conveyor belts to fuel, tires, heavy equipment manufacturers down to the nuts and bolts guys. Their economy is booming and is soaring in every aspect.
Soon, as the liberals in the west have their way, not only will coal miners oil field production and natural gas is replaced ala fracking concerns. Where are people going to work? If so many jobs are reliant on, or directly affected by energy then where does that leave our economy?
Young folks are so railroaded into "change" that they forget about the impact that it will have on the economy and their future as well.
Trust me I am glad you erect windmills AhabMcBathsalts pretty cool honestly, and I can't blame you for taking a nice paying job and looking after your future.
But the young forgot where the US came from and made it so prosperous.
If we take all that away, what are we looking at? Losing our world power status. Huge negative economic impact.
That's why I do not believe that it ever will go away, the energy industry.
When Hillary Clinton was campaigning in 2016, she said when she gets elected a lot of cola miners are going to be jobless. She failed to mention the 4 times as many jobs that are directly related to them.
A little something to think about #Mikedrop

What is the percentage of electricity that wind provides vs fossil fuels?
Nothing to do with politics, just real life economics and population growth.
Truth is population especially in larger cities is growing substantially faster and faster.
I am all for green energy, but a realist also.
I will Google total US energy consumption and where it comes from.

The nat gas market in the USA is going to be interesting over the next couple of years. Because of the huge growth in fracking nat gas is going to be almost free in a lot of local areas.

Wind 6% nuclear 17% coal 24%, Natural Gas 34% Hydro 7% other Biomass solar petroleum geothermal etc.
The mine I work at used to ship trains to a power plant outside of state, they canceled their contract and decided to go with natural gas... That was until last year when a huge cold snap hit and natural gas prices spiked and the cost of gas was too much even for our green friends outta state.
So back to coal they went and our contract is back.

I don't think you are going to be out of a job, nor do I think I am going to be out of a job.
Here's to retirement..!! Forecast for my mine is through end of 2038. Which will be just right.
Then statues of coal miners and one of myself will line the main street here in town. I will be regarded highly as one of the country's last coal miners and parades will be held in my honor.

We just need to put Trump in again.
Which will be easy if his democratic contender is Warren or Sanders, or even Bloomberg.
It's like Larry Bird when Dennis Rodman was guarding him when Rodman played for the Pistons.
Rodman would play tough defense and be all over him and Bird would yell to his teammates to pass the ball to him because nobody was guarding him... This was after Rodman said Bird would just be a regular baller if he was black. But was held in high regards because he was white....

Anybody on here ever work on huge oil tanks? I was passing by a white one today with stairs wrapping around it. Looked cool.

They probably need to wash and paint them every couple of years. I don't think it's a high maintenance piece of equipment. Like it's just a tank. Maybe a couple of valves that need to be checked once in a while.

Do you know if they are filled to the brim?

It's a storage tank. Sometimes it's empty, sometimes it's full.

Can you imagine how spooky it would be, to open one of those empty spheres, and shining a flash light in there to the bottom, like it's so far down. And then ur friend starts pretending to push you in. You'd fall so far. I wonder if that's happened to anyone

I knew a guy who used to climb into tanks like that and spray liquid metal to coat the interior walls. Made hella cash but he probably died like the terminator in the second movie..

I worked in an underground bunker one time. It was at an airport to hold all the fire suppression shit they use if an airplane blows up on the tarmack. It wasn't that cool and the pay wasn't spectacular either.
I've been in a few steel bolted water tanks before too. It's cool when they do the leak check and fill it up, and you gotta seal everything. But it was shitty working on a ladder with ghetto scaffolding.

Water Treatment Specialists pay varies greatly depending on where you're working. Small municipal water supplies don't pay well at all, but larger systems with 50,000+ people served typically offer good pay considering the amount of work involved. It's a super pud job like 99 percent of the time.
The highest paid workers are usually in the private sector doing pre-treatment for refineries. They make considerably more money than the public sector provides and typically work 8 hours a day with weekends off. Public jobs often require split or rotating shifts, so working for a private company is preferable.
It does require certification. The tests are much harder than the job itself but certification is definitely obtainable. A lot of cities hire trainees under the circumstance that the employee is certified after a year of experience and that's generally how most people start out.
