Ever met somebody who wants to go deep, but

I have a very good friend. A little over a year ago I introduced him to psychedelics and had several low dose trips with him, and after that I took a long break from them that's still in effect. He has continued to use psychedelics, mainly low doses but sometimes higher ones, but it's interesting to me how he claims to get very little out of his experiences. I view psychedelics as something outside of recreation because after a few very heavy trips and experiences I have found it difficult to take the 'serious part' out of them and keep from remembering the things that really spin me out while tripping. I still think they're useful like this because they give insight into how your mind, your perspective, and your world work together uniquely.
We frequently have a conversation about this, and how he could go about getting 'deep' into a psychedelic trip. I told him he needs to take a large dose and go at it alone, but it seems the time in which he did this with 4 grams of mushrooms in tea it was a little intense but not profound. Granted, he was watching a movie as he tripped and they may have been weaker mushrooms.
Most recently, I couldn't figure out whether to recommend a very high dose alone to try to sort of break through, or starting with meditation and then incrementing low doses until he achieves what he's looking for. On one hand, the high dose is earth shattering enough to likely force one's mind open, but on the other sometimes the more willed exploration in lower doses has less potential to harm you and is more likely to blend in with sober living. These are just theories and I'm a little baked off of a modified firecracker recipe I made so I figured I'd let it cook in this part of the forum to look for advice.

My advice, leave him alone. You didn’t mention he was desiring anything different. He seems to enjoy them. Right? People trip the way they want to. Just because you feel like you have a better approach, doesn’t mean he should be subjected to an someone else’s expectation of what a trip should be.
I don’t think bigger doses will necessarily help, but, it could. I think you might be romanticizing the parts of a trip that work for you, and then comparing it to someone else’s idea of a proper experience.
Give me more background on this guy, and also why your commitment and concern that he have a certain type of trip?

He's one of my closest friends, we're also housemates. He struggles a lot with figuring out what he wants to do at this point in life and has a hard time making decisions. The only reason I ask is because he says he thinks he could be getting more out of psychedelics but isn't. It's really of no problem to anybody how anybody trips, I just didn't know what to recommend, a bombastic big-dose trip or smaller focused ones

The problem is that, even if you were to do everything right and create the perfect environment to go deep, mushrooms are unpredictable and you don't fully know the landscape of his mind. He could be resisting every time he has an experience that shows signs of going deep.
I would suggest this to him
- Take a break from all drugs for a month
- Do some soul searching (spend more time in the wild, reading books, away from technology)
- Do some writing
- Spend time alone with little to no distractions (maybe some music) and just "be"
- Then after a month, take a 3-4g dose, depending on the potency of the mushrooms. Get yourself in a comfortable dark place (or wear eye shades) and remain there for the duration of the trip with the focus being going inwards.
This is something that works for me but everyone is different.

Basically what Socrateshroom said, noting a real key is the no distractions part. You will certainly not go deep while watching movies. Hope your chosen path works out ✊🏻
