Question regarding re-sterilizing substrate
    #26489160 - 02/16/20 10:20 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Hi. New to the hobby and super appreciative of this resource and everyone's contribution.

I jumped in a little prematurely without doing enough reading and I bought some boom blocks from Ancient Path Naturals thinking they would be easy to get started. I got 11, in fact. I inoculated them all following the instructions and in sterile conditions. I got no growth from any of them - no mold, no stalled, just nothing. After some reading, I decided to do it right and made some BRF jars with my last syringe and they are growing nicely.

My question is regarding the substrate from the boom blocks. Since I have 11 lbs of it and to not just let it go to waste, I was wondering if it would be worth it to pressure cook the substrate from the boom blocks and use it in the shoeboxes I plan to setup instead of coco coir? Though, I would still use the coir for casing.

Thanks in advance.

Substrate doesn't require sterilization (in fact many frown upon it). Pasteurization is more than enough, and some people don't even do that.

Thanks. I'll do some searching on how to pasteurize it. Was curious if anyone would recommend against it but I assume that the materials inside the package are still usable.

Maybe you forgot to read the forum rules and mushroom cultivation forum rules as well?

Don't skip on important reading and research and you'll have mushrooms sooner rather than later

Thanks. That's the logical answer. I'd just hate to throw away the money but live and learn. Plus I should stick to the TEKs closely before I change anything up.

Not sure what forum rules I didn't follow, but thanks for the responses.

I thought it was forbidden to post about growing magic mushrooms and saying names of vendors where you obtained substrates/equipment from. But on a second thought maybe it's just about spore selling vendors. In that case I take back that comment,i just wanted to pretend to be Shroomery moral police for a sec :bongload:
