Simple Pressure Cooking Question

Before reading articles, I went out and bought a digital pressure cooker. The manual claims 10.2 pressure. I know I need 15 psi for grain sterilization. I thought I read that if you do not have enough psi, you can just cook for a longer period of time? Is this correct? Thanks for the help

Yes you can cook for a longer time to sterilize at a lower psi.

The boiling point will only be 114.8 C (238.6F) at 10.3 psi.
This graph shows a (very) rough estimate for quart jars to be sterilized at a given psi, although you'll likely be working with smaller spawn jars.
tl;dr yes, about twice as long (3-4 hours instead of 1.5-2 hours)

In other words, get a presto. You will get sick of 4 hour cycles in a New York minute.

I couldn't imagine doing 4 hour pc cycles if you can afford it I would recommend a presto. Been using mine for years and I think it was around $100. Put a few quarters on the weight and it'll stay between 15-17psi. Would love to get an AA one day but they are expensive

I used an electric pressure cooker for my first two grain jars and 6 BRF before getting a presto. I have pictures of the jars progress in my grow log you can check out. I read so many people saying it simply wont work, it was discouraging. Its nice to see people in this thread speaking the truth. Don't cook it too long whatever you do.

It doesn't use a gasket so you never have to worry about it failing. And you're supporting American manufacturers instead of Chinese (if you care about that). Also you get to flex on other cultivators. Idk, it isn't worth the 3-6x price point for that imo.

I own both. The aluminum casting of the AA is at least twice as thick as the Presto. Besides never having a gasket to fail. Also thick aluminum handles instead of plastic handles. They are manufactured in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and have been for decades. IMO they are definitely worth their asking price. Take care!

It heats and cools more evenly. Not that the presto isn't good. Maybe I will do a write up this evening presto vs AA
I actually use both at the same time some days. It's good to have extra supplies if you have the space.

Instapot will always work, I used to do the extra 4 jars my presto couldn’t fit in mine. Butttt....
They’re better for cooking meat than sterilizing grain jars. Throw a frozen rack of ribs in that instapot there with some veggies and spices, come back in 3hrs, and you’ve got a delicious meal. That’s what it’s best for. Get a presto. Works better than an instapot and just as good as an all american.
