Newbie Contamination Questions
    #26486907 - 02/15/20 11:17 AM (4 years, 1 day ago)

Great forum.  I'm on my first grow.  The monotub here shows evidence of a contamination. Based on the description provided it could be penicillium or possibly aspergillus?  Or is this just mycelium coming through to the top of the bulk substrate?  I have several questions regarding this.

1.  If it one of the previously mentioned contaminants or an other can it be treated?  O.k. to remove the infected substrate and watch for recurance?  Should I try the peroxide or bleach treatment?

2.  The monotub appears very moist with condensation on the sides and lid.  I have the holes taped as recommended while the substrate is being colonized by the grain spawn.  I read other places that you should have some air exchange.  Which is the correct answer?  Should I stuff the holes with poly or leave them covered until the substrate is colonized. (no casing layer here).

Thanks.

One tip that will relax the worries of your first grow is that the discretion in your eye for mold will increase, don't fret. Congratulations on taking the first steps though!

1. Pics are hard to tell, but it looks like mucor or cobweb mold. In my experience the success rate is bisected equally. When I have been successful, I sanitized a spoon with a flame and dug it out. Other times it kept reoccurring and the tub was lost

2. Keep the holes covered until you begin to see pins, usually around 10 days. Replace the tape with polyfil at that point :mushroom2:

My two cents, and it's only worth 2 cents.
The way it is crawling up the tub and the outer reaches of said area. It looks like mycelium to me.

I personally would let it continue to grow, keep away from other tubs in that applies.

Seems a little dry? From picture?
Of so, go ahead and mist it.

I read that cobweb is actually quite rare.  Here  is a post of a write up by a very well trusted cultivator.

" Cobweb mold. If you have Dactylium that means your fruiting chamber is complete shit. 95% of the time its just mushroom mycelium. 4.8% of the time its a pin mold. 0.2% of the time its actual cobweb. You don't have it and if you do, you need to get your shit together."

And not to contradict what Tennessee Jed said,  but keeping holes taped over with duct tape is unnecessary nowadays.

New thinking suggests going right to fruiting conditions.  Ala 12/12 lighting with a 6500K light. Also, instead of polyfill,  use micropore tape. 2 layers on the bottom holes and one layer on the top holes.
Polyfill is kinda a pain, IMO.

But yeah, get thatsucker to Fruiting conditions right after spawning to bulk.
No need to keep in dark suffocating on CO2.

When you get a good  pin set,  increase FAE.
Unsnap the lid or remove a layer of tape from bottom holes.
Cheers, GL
