Confused about best Tek for Rye Grains & MycoBags
    #26487851 - 02/16/20 02:35 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

To give a bit of a back story I never originally intended to get a “kit”. I have all the materials (in storage) for PF Tek (BRF) and made one attempt. I had 4 jars and did not get a single to inoculate - pretty sure I had either air blow into my still air chamber or I where I left them actually ended up getting direct sunlight.

Anyway, moving forward 6 months I now live in a shared house in London and am looking for a less “space consuming” option and one that doesn’t lean to weird questions being asked about my activist in the kitchen.

I’ve decided to buy that I believe to be a half way option between grow kit and DIY.  A bag of pre sterilised Rye grain coir, coffee and gypsum substrate (1200ml) that I can inoculate and it comes with a breathable grow tent (XL) and some perlite to put the cake on (Cylocybe UK vendor)

I’m guessing risk of contam is super low as the sterilised medium comes prepared and all I need to do is the easy bit and wait for it be colonised before putting the cake into the mycobag with soaked perlite to fruit.

However, I am aware from previous searcher this might not be the optimal route.

I am in two minds (and please correct me if my knowledge has holes in it) whether to run with the above method or to try and mix the colonised grain bag to a bulk substrate in the mycobag and get a much larger yield?

The only perceived problem is that I am opening myself up for contamination going down this route.

Or do I buy a new large tub and go down the mono tub route? Which was the next step for me after I completed a PF Tek grow. However, I likely have more space for a bag.

I am also worried about FAE - how reliable are the mycobag for this?

Ultimately, my goal right now is to get some mushrooms that me and my gf can do without waiting a further couple of months and sinking a few more pennies.

Look forward to seeing it anyone can help!

I’ll certainly be logging my progress whatever route I decide to take.
Which fruiting method
You may choose only one

Bod's unmodified tub tek is about as easy as it gets. The added bonus is that you can get everything you need locally (maybe not petri dishes if you go the agar route - but you can do agar in jars too). Since this is the route you had planned on going I suggest just jumping right into that now. Long term I think you'll be happier going the DIY route especially considering it's so dang easy.

Where is you mycelium coming from? Spore syringe? Are you saying you already have of cakes fully grown? Or you are going to inoculated a presterilized grain bag and fruit it I'm bulk? You can't birth a grain bags as a cake the grains will fall apart on the perilite.

So if you inoculated a grain bag, go to bulk via bods tub Tek :whathesaid: if you have cakes already made via PF Tek you can birth them on perilite in a grow tent or what ever the kit has.

Hi,

Seems like I am more confused than originally thought.

It’s coming from a syringe.

I’m going to inoculate A pre pasteurised pag of rye grain, coffee, gypsum and coir. Not sure if I can post a link but I purchased it from Cylocybe.

So the rye & coir substrate comes in an injectable bag (self healing point) and then it also comes with a larger mycobag and some perlite for fruiting.

All I wondered was whether I can mix with more coir substrate for a bulkier grow or if I just take the colonised rye / coir brick/cake and fruit it within the mycobag with some foil between it and the perlite

The reason I am not doing the above route is that I cannot really access my old gear (tubs and jars etc) and have already spent money on the kit. As it feels like it’s a diy method just completed by someone else. If that makes any sense without being obvious.

I’d love to graduate to the above Tek but I share a single room with my girlfriend at the moment and the work spade is not really going to work. But if I can speak to bulk in the mycobag it might be the best in between..

Hey,

Thanks for the response. I addressed all points in my larger response.

Ok so. You can inoculated the bag, thanks for picture. When it is fully colonized break up into a small plastic shoebox and put it into fruiting. No need for a bulk substrate it is already in you bag. This allows them to sell far less grainspawn because the coir is cheep and takes up most of your surface in the bag. It will colonize but u would not add more substrate after it is ready to spawn. Also you do not need perilite if you are gonna mix it into a shoebox. Search engine Mushboys Shoebox Tek.

I have a Rye bag from the same place that has just been opened, cased with 2cm of Verm and placed in a shallow dish (for stability) on a bed of wet Perlite inside their equivalent of what I assume is a SGFC?

The Mycobag was inoculated with 2cc of well developed Zapotec spores that had been allowed to develop into a nice ball of snot in a syringe full of nutrient for a couple of weeks before inoculation.

Now I'm at the fruiting stage I'm getting nervous about two things - temperature and when to expect to see fruit.

Am I right in thinking that the Mycelium has to colonise the Verm before fruiting occurs? I'm misting and fanning 4-6 times a day at 3 hr intervals and they're sitting at 21 Deg in ambient light.

All good?

They're ALL edible . . .
