What are the chances?

I found a spore print on paper that I made a long time ago but the print had moved from the center of the paper to the folded edges. I have no idea how that may have occurred. I also found a bag of aborts and tiny shrooms that have to be at least 10 or 15 years old. There are some pieces of cap. Do you think that there are viable spores here, and if so what would be the best way to get them to agar?

You can still make tissue cultures from dried mushrooms too. You might be able to skip the spore step and move straight to agar with one of the aborts. Maybe try spraying or soaking one in H2O2 and one not to see if that makes a difference in how clean the first culture is. I think I read somewhere that would help, but I can not remeber. I have had a very reputable mycologist say you can resurrect a strain from a dried fruiting body though. Keep us posted!

Unfortunately it is very unlikely that you will have success with those old spores or dried fruits. I think it is easier to get new spores, I have seen some people attempting old spore revival and it looked like a painful and disappointing experience

I am not putting a lot of faith in resurrecting a mycelium sample from this mess. They have been dead for quite a number of years, but, there may be a viable spore or two. I was thinking about re-hydrating a couple of the caps and maybe taking a gill sample to agar. Maybe there are spores that could be viable there.

You are very likely right. I did get new spores from a trusted vendor, and I have a couple of projects going. We don't know how long that spores remain viable. These have been kept in the dark at about 65 deg F. There must be millions of spores in this bag, and if I can find 2 that are viable it would be worth the risk of losing a couple of agar plates. I think that these are the original PF strain (he called them "Fat Asses" if I recall).

The problem is that mold will pop up faster than you can grow out the myelium which would take weeks. If you do it for fun then fair enough. Alternatively you can trade some spores - the marketplace will be available to you once you are registered for some time. I am 100% sure you can get the original PF strain quicker here than germinate those spores, but it's you call good luck with it!

I have had duds with 2015and on so far. Will keep you updated.. seems like foil at 110 in the summer sure makes the spores sad.

I am sure that you are right! But, I think that I am going to give it a shot, just to see. As a next step, I am going to empty the bag into a strainer to see if I can separate the dust from the old fruit. Then I will try to re-hydrate all of the caps that are open, and see if I can flush out any spores in the caps.

I inoculated 2 plates from the dust that I collected from this bag of old fruit. These are at least 10 years old and maybe as old as 15. Something is happening, but it's much too early to be able to tell what.
