Muh first tubs! Mostly-unmodified (sorta) shoeboxes
    #26487124 - 02/15/20 01:51 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I've only ever successfully cultivated once, using PF Tek. So, after much research, I decided to try Bod's Unmodified (shoeboxes). The only twist is; I painted the bottom of the tubs black. Maybe unnecessary, maybe not - but figured "why the hell not?"

I'm about 2 weeks in and they're pretty well colonized, and looking super healthy. From what I've read, I can just flip the lids at this point and allow for some FAE, and they should be set for fruiting conditions.

I've also read that I probably could have just gone to fruiting conditions immediately, and I'd likely be much further along than I already am. Oh well, just wanted to be safe.

It's roughly 50/50 coir/verm. I did use a thin casing layer. Fully colonized rye berries - 1 jar per tub. A lot, but it paid off...the mycelium showed visible growth after day 1. I see zero signs of contams. I attribute this to letting the berries colonize a bit longer than I'm seeing others do it - they were pretty much solid white, even after the last shake.

So - here I sit, thinking about flipping the lids and going for the fruits, or putting a bag over them like this person recommends:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=25274461&page=0&vc=1#25274461

The original Bod's thread just mentions flipping the lid immediately:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22337800

Mine are clamped and have been since spawning them. I'm thinking about opening them up, either way, right now.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Looks healthy and dialed in! Nice microclimate on the substrate and fruiting chamber.

Thanks! I kinda followed my gut - I clamped them shut until the substrate was pretty well colonized. Just flipped the lids, we'll see where it goes!

Following as Im going to be using the same style, but my jars aren't ready yet. I take it you shook your jars more than once? How do you feel about that rather that once?

and do you have any tubs with no casing layer, to serve as an experiment?

Yeah, shook them up maybe 6 or more times over the course of a month. I think that helped a lot because they needed shaking more often toward the end. It got harder to break it up and I ran out of time to wait. I saw visible growth through the casing layer in the first 24 hrs. This stuff really wanted into the world by the time I spawned!

No tubs without casing but I might try at least one in my next series. I dunno. It stands to reason that it would help prevent contams and hold in more moisture - especially if I go right into fruiting conditions next time. It’s not like it’s a great additional cost and I don’t think it hurts anything.

Theres my first attempt at bulk in shoeboxes, im sure it couldve been better but i kinda neglected the shit out of em. Also i had fashioned a spray bottle out of one of them manual febreze bottles without aerosol in it and didnt fully wash it out i guess haha. Sprayed it one day and could smell the scent still.
Plus they were basically multispore, scraped a 3 year old Gt print with a scalpel and poked it in agar then did 2 transfers i believe before making mini g2g containers out of tall baby food jars so i could see how it would look on oats before wasting my quarts.

Did just 1 qt spawn to 2 coir only for 3 tubs, no casing on any. Got around 60 dried g's from em so far. Theyre still slowly pushin em out in a cold closet so ive let it be haha.(like i said neglectin the hell out of em,  just bottom watering for a few hours every now n then)

Edit: i have the $1 boxes from dollar general (real flimsy n brittle wont be getting more) and walmart much better than Dg's at least. I never"flipped" my lids but i did put em diagonal to where 2 corners were open for awhile every now n then

Edit:edit: haha just a tip, if you make sure to shake your jars while they are still warm after pc'ing theyll stay much easier to shake. And you shouldnt have to shake 5 or 6 times, let your initial inoculation grow out some more to about 30 percent then shake em and make sure it actually mixes good all around and that should solve that problem.

The more you shake the longer it will take because the myc must then recover

Nice! It's encouraging that you could leave em be like that and they're doing so well.

How are you doing the watering between flushes? Just pour it in and let the cake soak it up? How much water?

All three tubs pinning as of yesterday! Been fanning and misting, even though it's supposedly not necessary. I don't mind and they seem to respond to it. They smell great. The cakes consolidated pretty quickly, pulling away from the edges, etc.

First flush on two of three tubs. Not bad, but I had better flushes on my pf tek cakes with the same genetics. Had way bigger fruits on my first flush with pf tek as well.

So...some questions and thoughts.

Are the tubs too tall? As tall as they are, with no vents, maybe there's not enough FAE? Thinking I might cut some small holes and cover in micropore tape, on the next tubs.

After picking, I poured water in, let the cake float in it overnight, then drained it. I've seen others do this - is this the best method for the next flush?

I sort of butchered the first tub when picking. Left big divots and pulled out more mycelium that I would have liked, no matter how carefully I twisted and pulled. I used scissors to snip the fruits at the base of the stem on the second tub I picked. What's the best method here?

Any other thoughts?

UPDATE:

First flush from all 3 tubs - ended up pretty much at 3 dried oz. in total. Not sure how that ranks, but I'm pretty pleased. The "runt" tub ended up producing a solid ounce alone, which surprised me.

Problem: After picking, I dumped fresh water into the tubs. The cakes want to float, so the tops tended to dry out a bit. Should I put something heavy on them to submerge them?

Do you typically let this sit for 24 hrs. like BRF cakes, before draining?

After draining I'm noticing that it's harder to keep the cakes moist - they seem to be drying out. Any tips?

Would also appreciate some feedback on the questions in my last message, if anyone has anything.

Thanks!

Well ill start with, FUCK YEAH MAN!!! Looks like a great haul! And bigger fruits tend to come in later flushes

Then- you typically dont want the sub pulling from the edges. Tends to cause pins to form on the side between tub instead of on top. Thats usually fixed by kinda tamping the edges down when you initially spawn and makin the surface as level as you can

As far as the fae for the tubs im certain theyre getting enough, you even said you are fanning em
For the soak, as far as "best method" thatd be debatable one of those "personal preference" things. I know ive read some people use the same type of tote its in and grab another to slide inside then weigh it down. Others just mist the hell out of em. The timing is another variable that is up to you, just dont do it so long everything crumbles or becomes too waterlogged

For harvest some folks use breadknives, i havent yet but apparently it works purty well for canopies
But still great job man!

A scalpel or x acto helps a lot for harvesting shrooms that like to pull sub out with them.
