Do you think Zappa was honest about his drug-free life? * 2
    #26486711 - 02/15/20 08:51 AM (4 years, 2 days ago)

Frank Zappa was one of the 'hippy' movement's biggest critics, but the people he hung out with and their early antics just scream acid and acid related activity. He was surely surrounded by acid much of the time, so I think it would be possible he had been dosed or tried it and simply wanted to remain completely disassociated from its proponents.

I only think of this because I'm high and listening to Freak Out!, and the lyrics and music are a little out there.

I'd say his stuff is very "out there", but I don't think you necessarily have to take drugs to be "out there" creatively. One guy I went to high school with was creative and weird as hell and never touched recreational drugs.

I can't take him seriously with this criticism when he had a god dam cigarette in his mouth at seemingly every moment.

Gonna categorize my 'drugs' as bad and ignore the blatant hypocrisy?
Gtfo.

I never knew he claimed to be drug free, it’s BS if he did. I saw a music video he made from the early ‘70s I’m guessing, it eventually morphed into some crazy claymation shit that was obviously heavily influenced by LSD. It was probably the most psychedelic thing I have ever seen, I had a copy on VHS, LOL.

I mean there definitely can be a cost to using drugs as a creative shortcut. I don't know a lot about Zappa's bio or quotes on the matter though.

I'm actually unsure whether or not he straight ahead denied ever using mind altering drugs, I only know that he thinks drugs can't really help anyone improve the world. I do remember reading a lot of quotes from him chastising drug users and drugs, however.

Here's a quote regarding LSD and drugs and the government:

Quote:

"They were just so full of dope that they were going blindly their own way, not thinking for a moment that the origin of LSD was in the CIA and a lot of them probably don't like to think about that now. By taking LSD they were helping the CIA in one of their favorite experiments. After they got done taking volunteers from the army, they actually made a profit selling it to people on the street, and seeing what actually happened to a civilian population. They got it in the ass so bad from the CIA that they don't even know. So to sit on the outside of that and say it was stupid will not make you any friends in the group of people who really believe in it, and since there were more of them than of me, it sort of set me up in a negative light for all the years to come. (...) They're a cultural phenomenon, they're an industry, and they're a tool by which the government keeps the kids in check. They also use the same thing to keep the housewives down. Every time you take some dope and you think you're getting some escape from your life, you're just playing right into the government's hand. Everytime you use whatever it is that you use, you're registering yourself as a pawn. (...) The minute you start taking those drugs, they got you. I'd rather be free inside of my mind. If you don't have enough money to beat the system, the least you can do is keep your self-respect and know what you think is not chemically induced by a governmental agency."

Yes I do believe Zappa was mostly drug free, except for millions of cigarettes and drinking coffee by the pot

My guess is he may have tried LSD once but I’m not sure and I have doubts. He did admit to smoking pot a couple times  and said it did nothing for him.

He was framed by the police and arrested for making pornography early on (funny story, look it up) and spent a small amount of time in jail. People have speculated that he either got beat up or raped or something in there, and that had a lot to do with his fear of authority figures. The anti drug thing was mostly based on his fear of going back to jail. He didn’t want his band to be on drugs because they were working for him and he didn’t want somebody’s legal problems to ruin his career or even just a show or tour. He took his music very seriously, and I think he saw drugs as a major threat to his wellbeing.

At the same time his house in laurel canyon was basically a flop house for all sorts of weird hippies to congregate at so you know there was drug use going on, and he was probably more permissive in private and with close friends than he made himself out to be in interviews when asked about drugs.

I don’t think any psychedelics were needed for Zappa to make his music or videos. He was just that creative and weird of a guy.

He’d stay up all night drinking coffee and composing sheet music. He was a really hard worker and dedicated to his craft. He put out a massive number of albums in his lifetime and he basically spent every waking hour working on his music. He saw drugs as a threat to his livelihood.

Yeah it's not like the effects of the drug were determined by what the CIA or the government might have liked to achieve with it.

Yeah this explanation makes sense I think. And for sure the drug war was a way of making the sorts of people who would oppose Vietnam etc into criminals.

Check this out. The shit starts to hit the fan about 2:40 into the video. It looks very inspired by a whole lot of acid to me. I really don’t get his music, but I’m glad he mentored Steve Vai.

Captain Beefheart > Zappa in terms of drugless musical genius.

Correct x 100%. I'm a Zappa fan and I can't help but feel pure judgmental elitism on his end regarding chemical compounds, all while not batting an eye at his Keith Richards-like cig smoking. I believe he smoked pot once or twice and it didn't go well. He also wouldn't hire you into his band if he knew you used anything. Talk about unironically being authoritarian in an art space, huh? I get it, his band, his rules. Always seemed "off" to be that creative yet stringent somehow. Almost like that combo shouldn't have worked at all, let alone for Zappa lol.
