First time making WBS jars and doing A2G (w/pics) look ok?
    #26485424 - 02/14/20 12:58 PM (4 years, 3 days ago)

So this is my first time making jars I bought premade my first time around as well as spore syringe and quickly realized the advantages of using Agar! Just wanted to ask how these looked as far as moisture of Wbs. Thanks I’m advance. Got a lot more going on will be showing a lot more work soon!

This is the plate I used to knock up 9 jars!

The picture shows at least that the moisture level isn't way too high. Doesn't look like the WBS is getting sticky. I've made the mistake of over-hydrating and getting a mess inside the jar that's like a single lump. The fact that you were able to get at least one of the wedges down the side of the jar suggests that the grains aren't all stuck together. On the other hand, if your moisture is too low, that would be hard to assess from a photo.

The jars seem to be more nearly full than I would target. It's going to be difficult to shake them effectively. Especially since the agar looks stuck to the glass, you will probably have to wait for the mycelium to grow all the way from the wedges to the far reaches of the jar. When you leave yourself room to shake the WBS, you can break up mycelium clumps and spread the pieces around so that the resulting growths don't have to travel as far.

I still have a WBS grow going but I've had pretty good results after switching over to oats. The main benefits of oats over WBS are: (1) cheaper, (2) cracked corn and some other materials in WBS can get sticky but oats don't seem to do that, (3) oats have a more uniform size distribution, so it's easier to get consistent hydration.

Looks good so far, maybe slightly full but whatever.

Learning to bury the wedges is tricky but as long as they’re not stuck to the glass above the seeds you’re ok.

My method now is to put each palm on one side of the jar and move my hands back and forth pretty fast to kind of spin it for a second. That’ll usually sink them a tiny bit and then you can tilt the jar like 40 degrees and slap it a few times rapidly and that will move the seeds from the bottom to the top.

Yea out of 27 jars 8 of them were too hydrated and were a solid mass/ messs in the bottom and most of the jar. Next time around I will def leave more room to shake the jars I can shake them this time just not as easily as I would like. I def figured out a sort of shaking method kinda like A.K.A described that I could get the agar pieces distributed throughout, and I even used a rubber mallet to assist me a few times. I may switch to oats, rye, or milo/millet next time around. That WBS stunk my house to hell. But all in all I’m happy so far with all my progress in only a month. I’m getting excited cuz my first couple tubs will be getting spawned in the next few days, also one of my first Pe agar plates is knotting so hopefully I’ll be seeing pins soon so I can clone it too! Thanks for everyone’s help so far!!! Mush love

You can put a little verm in the bottom of your jar before loading it if you think it’s gonna be too wet. It’ll soak it up and redistribute it when you shake later.

Wish I thought of that. Noted I lost a few but it was my first time. I chalked it up as a learning experience and will do what you said next time if anything for the wetter ones (the jars at the end were more wet because I did 20 lbs at once and I couldn’t spread it out thin enough to dry the bottom layer enough I’m guessing. I May try again after I spawn some of these that are finishing up colonizing depending on end results, or I might try some oats or Something else. What’s every body’s favorite wbs, grain, oats, etc?
