Contamination ID help
    #26485072 - 02/14/20 09:45 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I have some contaminations on agar plates and hope to learn more about them.

The first one, is this 'cobweb' mold?  Second pic, contam on bottom and mycelium on top:

These white dots suddenly appeared all over the plate in the areas the mycelium hadn't reached yet:

Yes they are contams. Next time hopefully a spore wont fall on your agar.

Thanks Mycologist!  I did a large number of plates and most are doing very well.  I just pulled out these specific examples of contamination to try and learn more about them.

Not many of us here have knowledge of those species of molds etc.

Its better to just focus on what mushroom growth looks like and if it looks different, then you know its not what you want.

Those “dots” look like spores germinating to me:shrug:
I’d take a couple transfers from those.

Naw man thats mold bro.

I have seen it on my transfer plates.

When unsure, colonization time and location of growth can be a heads up that it is not shroom mycelium.

Yeah in that last picture, the large white mass to the right is the actual mycelium.  All good germination started from the center of the plate (I did not streak a pattern).  These white dots appeared all around the perimeter suddenly.  And these pics are at like 20x or 25x magnification.

If you added liquid spore solution and it “rolled” around it could’ve deposited spores all over.

Looking to learn all about it
