How long do quart mason jars last in this hobby?
    #26484191 - 02/13/20 06:24 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I assume Ball and Kerr didn't imagine that their customers would be smacking the shit out of their mason jars every couple of weeks.

Should I be worried about the jars ever cracking due to stress? Or perhaps microfractures letting contaminants in? When do I stop using jars to make spawn and use them to give gifts of shrooms to friends? How long do you guys use your jars for?

Lol I don't know about all that, glass is kind of in a weird quasi-state. It would take billions of years for them to be come petri dishes, I would assume they would shatter due to stress long before than haha.

Still, it's good to know I won't be shattering jars across my grow room any time soon lmao.

Use a bike tire or something other than your palm and I think you will be fine. '

I've been at it for 18 months. Only jars I break I drop on the floor. Lids are a different story

15 or so years.  But best guess is that the jars I currently have (cabinets stacked) are probably 10 years old.

Glass is imperfect, thus some jars have weaknesses and will crack under minimal stress.  I've seen new glass crack in a canning bath and have jars that have contained everything from salmon to spawn that are twenty years old and won't die.  98% trend toward the latter.

That's a good point. Some of my lids are showing little bits of rust. And jeeze, they're almost as expensive as the jars themselves! Something to be aware of I suppose.

Fair enough. I suppose if the ones I've been using for a year haven't cracked, there's no hurry to get rid of them.

I use them until they break or crack.  Otherwise nothing to be concerned about.

I haven't seen much correlation between the age of the jars and when they crack although you would think there would be. It seems to happen rarely and almost at random. I have a feeling it's more defects during their production than anything.
