GT don't want to pin
    #26484007 - 02/13/20 04:07 PM (4 years, 3 days ago)

Hello first time grower here!

I have successfully moved my GT mycelium into a monotub and it has been colonizing for more than two weeks now and while there's a snowy white layer on top, no pins have been showing up so far. The humidity constantly went above 95% and since I heard that it should be 90% I regularly opened the lid the first couple of days. But now I fear that the substrate could be drying out because of that and that the growth comes to a halt. The reason for all of that probably is too little vermiculite in the substrate mixture.

What do you suggest I should do?
My solution would be to check whether the lower part of the cake is dry and if that's the case I'd re-hydrate it, get it back to field capacity with some drainage holes in the garbage bag. And on top I'd put a casing layer of vermiculite.

Oh and the smell is nice, perfumey, not foul at all.

If you can figure out how to upload a photo, it really helps us. My Golden Teachers usually pin at 2 weeks, though some recently have taken longer. I bet you are fine.

Humidity is not measured on this forum by anyone. We look at the substrate and see how its behaving. (also those meters can't really measure the air exactly at the surface, which is the only air that matters.

I think most agree that the dream with a mono is less misting. It can cause problems... but that said, mist if shit looks dry... use the lid to cover areas that aren't dry, to keep that from getting overly wet. And mist high above the tub and let it fall.

In general, new excited growers want to do too much. I would close it and leave it be.

Take off that tape, you want your liner to be sticked to the sub.to avoid side pins, if its taped and when sub shrinks then there is no point to have liner at all

And yeah, knots are here..just don't worry to much and be patient

I have nothing to offer for your post, I just wanted to say that I'm new too and I glanced at the subject line and it made perfect sense to me when only two months ago it would have been absolute gibberish. And that's awesome.  I've starting learning this strange cool process and I empathize with a guy whose GTs won't pin because I'm one step behind him.

Looks like you are almost there. Nothing to do but wait. (And take off tape, but )

GTs I’ve got in tub now have been about week or 2 and knots are starting to form.  Best thing I’ve learned is to just leave it be.  It’s tough to do but, when you get busy and don’t spend all your time poking and prodding, you get nice surprises when you do check on them.

Thank you so much for your replies. Indeed, the first brave pioneers have started to stick their heads out. Is this now the time to take off the lid and give them light?
