1 Week post 1st harvest questions * 1
    #26483873 - 02/13/20 02:48 PM (4 years, 3 days ago)

Along with seemingly everyone else here, I'm using Bod's unmoded mono for the first time. My first flush went alright albeit the yield was less than I was expecting: 2.5oz for a 50qt tub. Not too bad, room to improve. I've been meaning to make a list of questions I could not find answers to for a week but life gets in the way. In that time more problems have arisen.
Some facts off of the top of my head:
  • 5qt of oat was used with 650g of coir in a 50qt sterilite tub
  • Some of my grain jars weren't 100% colonized, I didn't realize until I was pouring them into the tub :facepalm3:
  • Grow lights were used 8hrs a day
  • The substrate even to this day has yet to turn white. there are large patches especially at the corners that are just coir.
  • Temps ranged from 66-72F
  • Side pins were a major issue for me, likely because I was misting so much. About 1/3 of my harvest came from side pins
  • Fruits were pretty small, canopy was patchy and uneven
  • I did a poor job of cutting the fruits and left a lot of excess mushroom tissue

Misting mystery:
for the two weeks preceding my harvest I believe I was misting a little too heavily, however each time I opened the tub my sub looked pretty dry. I would estimate that I misted an average of 3 times/day with no change until harvest. My side pinning was definitely due to how much water was running down the walls after misting. I've seen some people saying they mist every day, while others don't mist after pins appear. Some said overhydration causes small fruits. At what point do I change up my misting schedule?
Is the right method to mist until pins appear then quit or mist lightly all the way until harvest?

All quiet on the substrate front:
Since harvesting Wednesday 2/5 I have kept conditions the same, save for misting less. I floated the sub to collect the side pins and heavily misted the top. The myc has spread out a little bit more but no pins have appeared. I had a few questions I was going to ask regarding what to do in my case however this is now moot because..

Gnats:
They appeared soon after harvesting and have grown greatly in number. Every post regarding flies and gnats makes it out like my tub is screwed. Should I try some fly tape or apple cider vinegar or just trash the tub and start a new one? Ideally I would like to save it. People have said they spread contams but did not indicate how severe or detrimental they are. Could they be the reason my second flush has yet to appear?
Here are pictures of my tub before harvest, and my tub today.

I had a lot more things I wanted to ask but forgot most of them when I decided to sit down and write this.I appreciate any help you can give!

Do you have a fan pointed at the tub? Those corners look dry but that's crazy considering how much you've been misting...

Maybe your sub wasn't properly hydrated

Edit... that whole tub looks pretty dry IMHO

How did you test the substrate for field capacity? If the substrate is too dry, misting won't do much, especially if you're using grow lights. You have to pour some water carefully down the side to get substantial amounts of water into the substrate.

My guess is either it was too dry to begin with, or the grow lights dried it out faster than misting could replenish the water.

I have no fan, and yeah I agree it dries out crazy fast, I misted it after posting the OP and just did again because it was back to bone dry. I hadn't thought about sub hydration and just assumed it was correct. When hydrating the coir it looked dry but I gave it the good ole' squeeze and got a trickle of water out.
After I harvested by floating the sub in water I immediately began draining it. I figured the 15-25 min of filling, harvesting and draining was enough water exposure for the second flush.
Here's a picture of the setup I'm using.

Whoa! That grow light is CRAZY close to the shrooms. You're not growing pot, lmao. I'd move the light a few feet away. That explains why it's drying out so quickly.

I just followed what bod said and added 3.25L to 650g coir, I did think it looked a little dry but I remembered that I have no frame of reference. I squeezed and got a little trickle so I thought it was good to go.
How much of an impact do you think grow lights make on evaporation? I figured it would be negligible with how much I was watering. you can see my lights in my comment above.
Do you think pouring a little water down the side at this point would help?

Haha god damnit. Just finished writing this comment when it notified me of your post^
While we're on the subject, should a light like that be on for a full 8hrs or should I tone it down? I didn't even think of the lighting as a possible issue

Well, remember Bod's recipes aren't exact. It depends on the coir you get, your local humidity, etc. That being said, it seems you prepared the substrate correctly.

That looks like a grow light for plants. I wouldn't keep something like that on for more than 30 minutes that close to the tubs. I just use regular fluorescent lights maybe 6 feet above my tubs, and that's more than enough.

Mushrooms generate their energy from decomposing the spawn, the light just lets them orient themselves, because I don't believe they contain the same types of gravity-sensing cells plants have, so without light it's harder for them to tell which way "up" is.

Yeah I'd pour some water down the side. And move the light further away.

No worries! At least you're willing to learn, that's the important thing.

I saw a guy a couple weeks ago who bought like $600 worth of lights, portable grow rooms, digital hygrometers, etc. and then deleted the thread because everyone collectively said "dude no"

Take a look at this pro for example, he has something similar to your setup, but those two bulbs provide light for like 30 spawn bags, not blasting down onto one tub.

So I guess my next focus is the gnat issue. I have some Jumex mango nectar on hand so I put it in a dish with some soap near my tub to attract the fuckers. Any other ideas?

RR's old school method is to just leave a bottle of open wine 1/4 full near the tub, but yeah pretty much anything like that will work. Usually I stretch some plastic wrap over the top of a bowl, then poke a bunch of holes in it. Gnats go in but they won't come out.

If you can put your tub outside it is best.

Getting the gnats out is not gonna happen. You just have to finish this grow and wait a few weeks to ensure there are none living in your house.

It is 10oF outside at the moment, I could probably get away with putting them in the basement but it's a good 10 degrees cooler down there as well.

Honestly idk man. Those gnats are bad. Each one lays like 200 eggs a day. Maybe you could get them to die from two days outside idk.

For gnats, ShaperDreaming (where'd she go btw) recommended to me a UV electronic catcher. I got the Katchy on amazon for 30$ or so and it eventually got rid of all of the gnats I had in my grow space

Update: I stopped using the grow light and just let the tub get natural light throughout the day. I have been watering heavily and it is fruiting again, slowly, a few at a time. I did note a mold patch today but I also have a white fruit that I would like to clone/print so I am waiting until the cap opens. Is this a bad idea? the mold is on the opposite side of the tub as the prized fruit. Should I cut my losses and just harvest it now? The tub is pretty fucked, my biggest worry is that this will impact future grows. I will wait a week after throwing this tub out before starting my next grow to prevent gnat contamination.
Questions:
  • Clone the white shroom, spore print, or both?
  • Give the tub a few more hours or trash asap?
  • Am I doing something glaringly wrong that is just going over my head, like the lighting issue as seen above?

You guys have been a big help, thank you for it.
