Final thoughts on flow hood
    #26482983 - 02/13/20 01:04 AM (4 years, 4 months ago)

Hey everyone!

Last check in before building my hood.  I going with the fungi fun tek.  Why? It's way more compact and inline fans are easy to get.  I'm matching a 24x24x8 1" wc at 400cfm fan with a tjernlund 8" fan that has around 480cfm at 1".  Is there any problems with that tek and the way the fan is inside the plenum and possibly blocking some of the filter? Or is the resistance of the filter enough to overcome any uneven flow? Is the purpose of the plenum simply to be an area of high pressure and the hepa does the rest are far as flow direction?

Thanks everyone! I've read everything here possible, but it seems that opinions have changed over time on this

Not familiar with that build, I’m in the process of building one myself. Are you going to be using a pre filter? I believe it is recommended to prolong the life of your hepa as being the expensive part of your build.

I’ve opted for a much stronger fan than I need and fitted a compatible speed controller to it with the idea that I can dial it down to achieve laminar flow and dial it up as the filter gets old and clogged.

Check this out! http://www.fungifun.org/English/Flowhood

I'm on the fence about a prefilter.  I'll probably use the hood for like an hour or two a week.  Seems like it will probably last forever at that amount

You can use a sheet of felt from a craft store as a good, replaceable pre-filter.  That's what I did and it worked great.

I’m basically building this flow hood from This tek to the letter. I’ve got everything I need now just waiting on the wood for the box to be delivered

You definitely want a pre-filter. Check out some of the videos of gr0wer aka Mike Myers when he gets some of the used FFUs when he shows the back side of the HEPAs. I use a washable filter from a small window AC I have lying around.

Nice tek! But how sweet to have the fan in the plenum if it works?

from what I remember inline fans are not as good for Laminar flow Hoods. Maybe they can work, but i would double check a lot first. I think something with how they blow air vs how squirrel cage blowers move it. Squirel cage blowers such as the daytona are a known quantity that works well. And If you think shipping is an issue.. you can find free shipping.. hehe.. or maybe a local shop that has them on hand.

I read Everything on here about that.  I think the idea that inline fans cause bad airflow is old tek.  I think the purpose if to build positive air pressure behind the hepa, and the hepa then smoothes it out as it passes through the tiny pores.  I can't imagine a squirrel cage blower being blown into the bottom of the box and bouncing around inside the plenum is any less chaotic.

I’ve seen people with fully functional hoods using in line fans. You just have to match it with your filter.

I have an in-line fan and a filter that I spent some time and research making sure it would work before I bought it. As soon as I get my wood for the build and it’s done I’ll let you know if it works or not. But I have it on good advice that it will.

Maybe it is.. but I would make sure before spending all that money is all I am getting at.

Centrifugal fans will absolutely work. Inline I dont have experience. I would not point a inline directly at the back of a filter, my thoughts are it would not be evenly distributed.

That is what the plenum is for. The plenum builds up the pressure so the air goes through the filter evenly. Definitely oversize your fan and just block off the intake air hole to reduce the pressure going through the filter. This way as the filter clogs you just let more air through the intake air hole.

Here are pics of mine...

I don't use it much anymore. I bought 2 filter fan units they are cheaper than building one and they are plug and play no building. Now I have an 8 x 2-foot flow hood. I bought 2 of them from HGRINC.com for $70 each brand new in the box. I live close so no shipping either

https://hgrinc.com/productDetail/Air-Handling/Used-Filter-System/01200470037/

Don't buy from them until it says last chance they keep dropping the price until it says last chance.

In response to that is what the plenum is for.

Yes , but pointing a fan directly at one spot will concentrate dirt and particulates in one spot giving uneven flows over time.. Squirrel cage fans are not directed at the filter. Same with centrifugal.

If using inline I would nake sure it was not aimed directly at the filter.

Yes, I agree. As you can see in my pic the fan is facing the bottom. I was just stating that the plenum is made to build up pressure and the built-up pressure will then go through the filter evenly. I was in the sheet metal union for 20 years and installing HVAC systems in commercial buildings is what we mostly did. 5 years of school to learn to do everything from design to installation. The union pays you to go to school and then guarantees you $40 an hour. So all you young guys check it out!!

Work with HVAC guys all the time.  Great trade.  I've been looking into them FFU's as well and even get the HGR mailer, but seems shipping up here would be a nightmare.  Have yet to find a CA auction house that has something workable.

When I built my hood, I called all around looking for the best price and all that. What I discovered was there was a local HEPA filter manufacturer, so I didn't pay anything for shipping. And I was able to get free shipping through amazon on the dayton blower... so all in all saved a ton for a brand new by making calls to local HEPA filter shops. I even had one place I could have bought from that installed FFUs and filters and such if I went that route and paid no shipping because he would have met me as he installed all over the area. Some things to think about.

ive heard the filters are the pain part.  evidently you can get used blowers from hvac people pretty regularly or so im told.  Ive got a few ears to the ground for myself but the preassembled units just look so appealing without the trouble of fabricating.

I was lucky enough to have a filter manufacturer/supplier nearby. Hospitals need them for example, as well as other Bio companies. So if you check your nearest major city or two for example you might have one nearby and only need to spend $10 gas instead of $300 shipping. I also have a Grainger nearby for the motor but it was cheaper to order online with free shipping.
