Corn grain prep (dehydrated corn for deer) 1

I don't see alot of people using Corn. So I will someday write up a Tek of properly hydrated corn as a grain.

That is what my 72hr corn soak and slight boil looks like after it has been on the drying table for 20 minuet. Oats I let sit overnight, but Corn is ready to jar or bag after 1 hr if prepped correctly.

Dam, a 3 day soak is awhile. I like oats cause after i rapid boil em i got nice nutritious water for agar or lc afterwards and i dont let it sit overnight just a few hours in a few colanders. But im thinkin i can cut that time down even more by making my own screen strainer to spread em out in a much thinner layer

That deer corn makes pretty good catfish bait once hydrated too. Nothing like chilling at the lake on shrooms.

Yeah the only problem with it is that it takes so long to hydrate, compared to other grains. So using potassium metabisulfite we can let it sit in a bath for up to 5 days.

Hey sock! I would love it if you wrote a corn tek. Where I live this is the cheapest grain but it seems it isn't very popular at the Shroomery.

I’ve seen someone pc the corn at 10 psi for like 20 min (can’t remember the exact numbers they took the post down) but do you think a 4 hours soak, pc’d, dried, then in to jars to be sterilized would work?

Honestly I Stopped working on this project. It is so much easier to just take oats, rye or WBS and boil and strain than to mess with trying to do a long soak on a hard grain. It can be done, and i did fruit off the deer corn, but it wasnt worth the effort.

Bummer bc i just got alot of dehydrated deer corn for free (my pops is a hunter). Gotta love free grain and i got some free wbs and deer corn from him and all i could think was free grain is the best grain lol ill do 72hr soak and 20-30min boil and dry and PC for 2 or 2 and a half hours amd see what happens. Unless i get better grain first but would still be curious. Would a grain this big benefit from being somewhat ground or cracked prior to actual prep is what i wonder? Would it make the soak a little less longer or make easier for mycelium to colonize through it? Nonetheless im interested in this. A 50lb bag here is $8 lol P.S. im even more interested in making this work on a legit level after reading your mush cult grain post lol im defintely a beginner but have alot of fee time to try 🤷 thanks for your time for posting your experience thus far with this grain 🙏✌️

You can try fermenting them as well. I haven't really gotten back to deer Corn in a few years.
Go for it and give it a go if you have the grain and aren't losing anything but make sure when you get them to a PC cycle then are properly hydrated. Love to see what you do with it.

Oh i got to give it a go now haha 😁 the thought to ferment never crossed my mind and might be worth a look see as well. Definetly nice experimenting without losing much of anything. For sure will share my results and experience with what i do when im able to and do get around to it here in the very near future. And yeah dont want no exploding corn poppin off in the PC lmao. Thanks again 🙂✌️🌽

My first post but long time lurker, I know it’s kinda a necro but whatever. I do deer corn exclusively because it’s cheap. I rinse it like 4-5 times, float the non corn stuff out. I bring water to a boil then simmer for 90 mins, basically the popcorn tek. For drying there are two methods I use, spread on a towel and let it dry until it leaves very little water on a paper towel OR sometimes I’ll put it in a mesh bag and throw it on the dehydrator until it reaches the right moisture content. Then PC for 90 mins.
