First time spawn bag user.

This is my first time growing and I went with a spawn bag thinking its the easiest and safest. I inoculated 5cc into a 1 lb rye bag exactly 2 weeks ago and still no sign of mycelium. The 3 questions that arise are
1. the temp fluctuates from 73 degrees F in the early morning to 81 degrees by afternoon. im using a seedling heat mat but still getting temp fluctuation. is this ok?
2. I have a condensation on the sides of the bag at all times. is this ok?
3. Is it wise to mix up the grain in the bag to spread any mycelium that my be growing in the center of the bag, where i inoculated?
If anyone has used a grain bag, how long did it take for P cubenis (B) to colonize?
Any advise will be appreciated

I would ditch the heat mat first off... Spore syringe to grain spawn bags in my experience takes a while to show signs as the colonize from the center out usually, they should start showing signs soon. That is if your sterile techniques were right, your spores were from a good vendor, and you didn’t screw anything up with that heat mat (should be ok just ditch it now). I discovered agar shortly after starting and will most likely never use syringe again. But hey I got good results from and syringe directly to grain too. Good luck

yeah man hopefully that heat mat didnt fuck your shit up, toss that mat asap, remember that inside is a few degrees warmer than the room temps, that's why the insides be sweating like that (condensation from the heat)
I'd leave it alone for now and stay patient, don't mix up the bag just yet, try to get us some pics in a few days so we can see if your grains are still good

So, i turned off the heat mat last night. However this morning the temp was down to 63.7 degrees this morning at 6am. Is that too low for mycelial growth?

Yea you’ll be fine, if anything get a space heater and heat the area indirectly. I keep mine at about 72-73, On the other hand I’ve also left them out to germinate and colonize in my house with temps at 60-65 and it was a little slower but still fine for me!

Mycelium can and will still grow at lower temps its just their metabolism is slowed way down so it grows slower. Definetly wont kill it though if thats on your mind! People store their cultures in a fridge to keep em lasting longer to come back to it

I started with vendor purchased spawn bags myself, with a spore syringe... about to inoculate some quart jars with a homemade spore syringe as a matter of fact... easiest means I have at the moment, syringe to grain.
It works when done correctly, damn good "sterile"-sanitary techniques gotta be employed... it can work tho. I'm using wild bird seed..

Ive had spores take 3 weeks to germinate. Best to keep waiting.
Those temps are fine, it might slow down you growth once it starts, but cooler temps are typically less conducive to contamination growth.
Spores to grain is damn near always a bad idea. The rate of failure is too high to be acceptable IMO.
There is absolutely no sterile procedure that will save you from a dirty spore syringe. Doesn't matter what you do, or what procedure you follow. Dirty spores are dirty. And most vendors are tapping the same sources for their spores, so one supplier isn't necessarily any cleaner than the others.

For me, it’s too much grain to risk going straight in with spores. Best try and germinate your spores on agar then clean them up and go to grain with a clean culture.

Could be metabolites could be bacteria or contam, hard to tell but it doesn’t look great imo
At this stage I’d probably break the mycelium up to spread it about the bag and see how it recovers. Basically the same as shaking a jar. If it recovers well I’d say you’d be looking at spawning when 100% with a view to get some fruits.
Keep us posted
