Rusty whyte side pins

So just to give you all some prior knowledge.  This strain was done using multispore syringes. Using grain this was then cased in coir. The box itself got contaminated but the mushrooms still fruited....just all from the sides.

Is there a way to prevent this or would this be a cause of the Contam?

Thanks for the love shroomerites....your gods amongst men hah

im a beginner myself but from my own ideas was light let into the fruiting chamber from the side?

i was under the impression that the side should be darkened for this reason.

sorry i have no answer but thats my noob 2p.

EDIT:- "Due to pockets between the substrate and container allowing microclimates to form" - p9hu7 2020

Light isn't the issue.

Improper contact between the substrate and wall of the container creates small pockets that become microclimates for pins to form.

Solution:

Insure that you have lightly tamped down your sub so that it is not only level on the surface but is in flush contact with the sides and bottom. If you have proper surface conditions ie you've properly hydrated your sub and haven't allowed the surface to dry out, all will be well.

Both of those totally make sense. Kinda like when a substrate shrinks while inside its container p9hu7?

Would darkening the sides still help with this issue or is that still just sort of last resort after things like proper surface moisture have been perfected first? Thanks for all the help shroomery fam!

Microclimate. Either take what you got and love it or run actual liners if it bothers you. Blocking light with tape or paint will enter you into noob Olympics.

Darkness isn't something that you need to worry about, use a liner if you like, plenty of people do. I don't, but that's just because I don't run full size mono, I do mini mono and shoeboxes.

The issue is climate, where is it favorable for mush to grow: side, bottom, or top. In your case it's the sides, so fix the climate via liner and or flush contact/leveled/dialed in substrate.

Do not worry about making the bottom and sides dark.

:whathesaid:

Darkening the sides isn't the issue.. it's definitely the surface conditions.. side pins happen when the sides have a better micro climate than the top..
