Choosing a microscope
    #26480093 - 02/11/20 12:31 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I'm interested in getting a microscope to distinguish contaminants in agar and in general to just mess around. Before anyone makes any suggestions, note that I don't live in the US and don't have that much selection. I know everyone recommends Amscope, but they're expensive as hell here.

I've narrowed it down to these two:

Celestron CM800
New
Objectives: 4x, 10x, 40x (no oil immersion)
Eyepiece: Monocular 10x and 20x
Fixed stage
LEDs above and below the subject

Erma (unknown model)
Used
Objectives: 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x (oil immersion)
Eyepiece: Binocular 10x
Mechanical stage
LED only below the subject
Costs twice as much as the Celestron

Now, the question is, is the much higher price tag on the Erma worth the extra features for what I want to do, or will the Celestron be enough?

The difference between 40x and 100x is massive.

Idk much about them I just bought a cheap one that plugs into my laptop but I would look up pictures of mycelium under 40x and 100x and see if it’s enough for what you want.

If you want to see some details of single celled organisms (e.g. bacteria) you will want an oil immersion objective. Without it the bacteria will look almost as dots (you can barely make out their shape) without details on their morphology.

You may want to check microscopes if you have friends at the local high school or university. Or from someone who uses microscopes. Once you see the difference between oil and no oil, you'll see how different it can be.

I'd go for oil immersion if I wanted to see details of individual bacteria.

Well, it turned out the Erma had been sold last week but I found a fairly decent used microscope at a good price, roughly the same as the Celestron. Monocular, 4-10-40-100x, mechanical stage, and LED lamp.
