Bitterless Gym
    #26479238 - 02/10/20 08:19 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Hi All! This is a mushroom I had identified by the head of the houston mycological society as a Gymnopilus. I would like to know exactly what species of Gymnopilus it was. It caused stomach pain and throat to feel slightly itchy when eaten raw, so I made a tea and it was a pleasent experience. There was no bruising or pronounced bitter taste. It may have been a just slightly bitter, but not in a bad taste kind of way or a way that made me want to spit it out. It smelled strongly of minty maple syrup. Rusty brown spore print, she grew alone on a seemingly healthy tree in central Texas this late January (it has been surprisingly warm rainy weather) It was about 5-6 inches wide.

Fairly sure it’s not Gymnopilus. Was the spore print rusty brown or rusty orange? Context appears white through the gouged section of the gills.

It’s got every indicator of something in the Agrocybe praecox group as far as I can tell. They typically fruit in the spring and continue sporadically whenever conditions are right for fruiting. It’s uncommon for them to fruit singly from a tree but i’m sure it’s not unheard of. A TI might have some better input.

I agree. This specimen is too old for a proper id from pictures, I don't think it has brown spores at all, the brownish gill color is likely due to age.

OP, the lack of bitterness should be a good enough indicator that the identification provided was wrong, and that you shouldn't have consumed it.

It was growing out four feet up on a healthy tree not out of the ground, wood chips, or dead wood. It spore printed rusty brown and Paul Stamets explains Gyms have rusty brown.

Do you have a picture of the print? I'm suspecting Pluteus cervinus group, print is pinkish to brownish.

I’d say a Gymnopilus print is more a dingy orange over rust brown.
