I was thinking of looking for an in-line stereo synth effects unit to play with music. Got any recommendations?
What are your overall needs? Would it just be for recording/messing around?
You mean a line input? Never seen it written like that before. Anyways I think most multi effects like that should work alright with a line input from a mixer or wherever, some might have specific line inputs but many these days are just designed to have enough headroom to work with any signal level. I run most of my effects from a mixers Aux outputs, and only a few have headroom issues. Mainly analog stuff like phasers where they are very sensitive to the input signal and can get distorted easily, but they still work just need a little volume adjustments for the cleanest sound.
Anyways there are a lot of great multi FX out these days, but the newer fancier stuff gets very expensive. I was really tempted to buy this cheaper modulation one for awhile: https://www.amazon.com/JOYO-Multi-effect-Effects-Modulation-Multi-pedal/dp/B07SD85GXJ
The reviews on it are pretty mixed so I never tried it. Seems like it does most effects pretty great for the price but some are meh. The nice part though is it's a dual mod engine that lets you stack them in series/parallel. So you can run the right modulation section into the left or use them separately or in parallel. Still half tempted to get it eventually just to experiment with all the stereo modulation it offers.
I'd recommend checking your local used market, digital multi FX get outdated fairly fast so you can often find some slightly older ones for dirt cheap used. And even some of the really old ones still are useful.

psi said: Yeah most things I've seen say they're worth about $1k. Only paid $100 for it, this guy I knew through work just wanted to get rid of it and that was the price he named. There are a few things on it that need fixing, a couple keys only work if you press hard and one of the slider things is broken off.
Damn that is indeed quite a score! That is the one problem with vintage keys though, they always need some work. But thankfully some repairs are pretty easy if you can find the right parts, been meaning to fix up some keys/sliders on my JX8P as well.
Too bad it's hard to actually find people to repair keyboards these days, especially some of the rarer vintage ones. But there are a lot of guides out.
Been really wanting to try getting into DIY synth gear, especially modular since decent modular racks are crazy expensive. Came across this amazing site with so many great resources: http://musicfromouterspace.com/
The founder of the site died a few years back sadly but whoever runs it now still sells kits and has left up the incredible repository of useful DIY synth info. A few other sites also sell MFOS kits like this one: https://www.soundtronics.co.uk/mfos-synth/
Need to get an oscilloscope to do some of the more complex DIY synth projects though. Those DIY MFOS projects are really amazing though, here are my favorite effects of his:
The MFOS SUBCOMMANDER
This one is a guitar synth pedal, using a filter and amplitude section that react to your playing. But it's so versatile it can also be used for a tremolo, phaser, and other classic sounds.
MFOS Echo Rockit Presentation
This one is a crazy analog delay with a built in LFO/filter and oscillator you can use to modulate the delay/filter. The filter also can self oscillate, it can do so many crazy sounds.

I like to ride my dirt bike, ride my BMX cruiser, drugs, play video games, go camping, gardening, making art, going to shows, hiking, mushroom hunting, playing with my son and our pets, and more!
Right now I'm going to go on a bike ride and try to give away a few ounces of shrooms to random hippie type people. Should be fun!

Very cool man. yeah, sorry. Inline stereo is more of a computer term, not really an audio term. I meant to say line input
And just for playing around with live sounds. I plan on putting in-between my computer audio output and my 3-Ch mixer.

Have you messed with DAW's and plugins much? That is really the best way to go for home use. There are thousands of free VST plugins many of which sound just as good as expensive software. If not start there and then look into hardware for some of the stuff you use the most.
I can link a few great sites for free plugins if you'd like. VST4FREE and KVR Audio are the best by far, the latter has free and paid plugins but makes searches very easy for specific stuff.

I got a circle of ladies I get high and do crafts with, about to get started on a mural in a friend's garage, I try to get out and go for a 1-3 hour hike on the weekends, and I'm trying to start going on longer and more distant treks on my own. I dive in the warm months but I'm getting my dry suit cert soon so I should be diving year round by next winter. I'm currently a student as well as working full time, so I feel pretty dead outside of that right now - especially with the lack of sunlight this time of year. I also go to a lot of gallery openings and concerts, and try to at least catch some live music as often as I can.
I'd like to get into kayaking because I live right on a river, and I'm joining a kickball league this spring. I suck at sports, but it's kickball.

That is one of the coolest things I've heard , for real. Bicycleing is my favorite thing to do , for fun and it's cool looking at the clouds.
Lit up a blunt in the sunshine. pedaling down the roads
The weather turned into a lightning storm. kept on riding through the rain , not so long after. I road my bike next to a rainbow in the sky. Than down to the shore , across the map.
Many times it would turn into a lightning storm on my bicycle rides.
They used to be a all day thing. I probably looked crazy, the sunglasses are like a wind shield. black skys , heavy rain pouring , lighting blasting. It was a rush. There was also nowhere to stop or hide. You could see the storms coming head on. For some reason it was a thrill going through them.

Pirate-blues, I highly recommend a kayak, especially if u live near a river. They are one of the best uses of a kayak.

Thanks Melon, That was a good time and I love watching the storms roll in! That is a fun thing to do for sure I think you would really like my bike. At least 10 people tell me they like it every time I ride it and that is not an exaggeration at all. I bet you would like my dirt bike too. It's a trials bike so it's light, bouncy, and really fast.
Let me know if you're ever coming this way and I'll setup a nice bike ride! One of my favorite scenic rides is to start at this place where you can watch the seals play, fight, eat, and burp. Then you ride through a fishing area that has military boats too and through an old military camp that over looks the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the rest of the Bay. This ride goes all the way to the bridge, then over it and down a mountain until you get to a really cute town. You can chill there and then take a ferry boat back to where you started the ride.
Giving shrooms away for free is actually harder then it sounds. It was fun and I did manage to give some to a hippie guy that was chillin in the trees. He was pretty happy and started eating them on the spot!

I spend a lot of time in my photographic darkroom developing film, making prints and doing wet plate collodion photography. About half of the images I make are BDSM pics I take with my girlfriend some of which we then post online. It's a wholesome, fun hobby.

Youtube mostly. LSD sometimes. Hiking and camping occasionally. Browsing the same 5 websites over and over. Listening to music. Watching TV shows online.
Actually I spend a lot of my time just thinking. I would mention my hobbies, but those are more like work than fun.

Pirate-blues, I highly recommend a kayak, especially if u live near a river. They are one of the best uses of a kayak.
Audacity is what I used for years, eventually I switched to Ardour which is way more full featured. It's also donationware, I paid 5$ for it though they recommend like 40$ Still use audacity for some simple audio stuff.
You can run plugins outside of DAW's, using programs such as VSThost: https://www.hermannseib.com/english/vsthost.htm great program for experimenting with different sounds using VST.
But using a DAW will make things much simpler for complex recordings, as each channel in the recording can have it's own plugins applied and edited in real time if necessary.
Here is a link to the free plugins on KVR sorted by rating, they have an insane amount of great free plugins: https://www.kvraudio.com/plugins/instruments/effects/hosts/free/highest-rated
VST/Plugins can include both effects and instruments, so you can create and process sounds with them. There are countless quality VST instruments, including sample based stuff, emulations of rare gear, and very unique/experimental stuff. You could create an entire orchestra using plugins if you wanted.
One tip for getting into software is get a cheap MIDI controller, something with a good amount of knobs/sliders so you can control the software using the hardware midi controller. So you can tweak the software VST effects controls using actual knobs/sliders. Makes it a lot smoother to do live editing and lets you control multiple parameters at once. Though if you're only using a few at a time it's easy to set them up on PC with a mouse, some have dozens of controls though which is when a controller really helps.

Hiking, backpacking and Mountain Biking: I hike almost every day and I go on a long backpacking trip once a year. So far, my backpacking trips have just been in the state I live in, but this year I plan to go to either the North Coast Trail and surrounding areas in British Columbia, or Southern Utah. For example, Zion National Park, Canyonlands National Park or Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument. I’ve been saying that I wanted to see them and other places around the world for years now, but this year I’m finally going to do something about it Next year? Maybe Ireland or Japan.
Music: Listening to music, going to concerts and spending a lot of money on headphones. So far, I own the following headphones: Sennheiser HD6XX, Sennheiser HD58X, AKG K701 and soon I think I’m going to buy these headphones . Or I’m going to buy this Synthesizer. I’ve been thinking about learning to play piano or guitar for a while and I think I’m going learn play piano first. Should I buy this Synthesizer or another one?
Watching anime, reading manga and playing visual novels:
Anime: I just finished watching Vinland Saga and it’s a great adaptation of the manga. I can’t wait for season two to come out because it will cover my favorite arc of the manga. I’m currently looking for another series to watch, but nothing looks interesting to me right now.
Manga: A couple years ago, I spent about 6 months reading about 50 mangas. I stopped reading them and started to play visual novels because I thought I read almost all the ones that I would like. Well, after I long break, I started to read them again. I’m currently reading the JoJo series right now and I’m enjoying it. I didn’t read them earlier because back then I couldn’t find good scans for all the parts, but that’s not an issue now. I’m also reading Attack on Titan, which has become one of my favorite animes/mangas recently. I didn’t think much of it at first, but it’s incredible now. You should check it out now if you thought similarly to me about the series. You’ll be most surprise by Eren’s character development. Yep, I can now confidently say that Eren is one of the best written anime/manga protagonists of all time! It’s going to be sad when the series end later this year.
Visual Novels: I’m currently waiting for Ciconia no Naku Koro ni Phase 2 to be released in a few months. Phase 1 was great, but it was too short. I’m really hoping when Ciconia is finished it will be as amazing as Umineko, which is my second favorite vn. If you never played a Visual Novel before, I recommend playing the following: The House in Fata Morgana, Umineko, Steins;Gate, Rewrite, Wonderful Everyday, Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, Dies irae, Muv-Luv series, Saya no Uta and Ever17. If you’re just going to play one, I highly recommend The House in Fata Morgana I played it last year and I still can’t stop thinking about how amazing it is. I think it’s easily one of the best works of fiction ever written.
Reading books: Last month I read “Name of the Wind” and “The Wise Man’s Fear” by Patrick Rothfuss and “Anathem” and “The Rise and Fall of DODO” by Neal Stephenson. I think I’m going to read Neal Stephenson’s latest book, “Fall; or, Dodge in Hell” next. If you’re waiting for George RR Martin to finish “The Winds of Winter” you should read “Name of the Wind” and “The Wise Man’s Fear” by Patrick Rothfuss. Or you if like speculative fiction, you should read “Anathem” and “The Rise and Fall of DODO” by Neal Stephenson.
Playing videogames: While I’m waiting for Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Doom Eternal Resident Evil 3 Remake and Nioh 2 to come out, I’ve been replaying Hitman and Hitman 2 a lot. I have to say, I think they’re the best stealth games ever made. I love replaying each mission constantly to see what awesome ways I can come up with to complete each mission. If you’re a fan of the stealth genre and haven’t played them yet, you should pick them up immediately.
Learning to make videogames: I’ve just started to learn to make my own games by following Brackeys tutorials on YouTube and I’ve been having fun with it so far. I don’t know if I’m going to try to get a job in the video game industry when I’m complete my degree in CS, but I think it will be a fun hobby either way.
Learning foreign languages: I’ve been learning Japanese for about a year and half now and I’ve enjoyed learning it so much that I’m going to start learning German when I’m at a satisfactory level with my Japanese. If you’re thinking about learning a second language, I highly recommend using lingq. I love it because you use content that you love to learn your target language. Which I think is the most important factor when learning a foreign language. If you’re using content you love, you’re more likely to stick with it and that’s the secret to successfully learning a foreign language. If you stick with it and study it every day, you will learn it.
Astronomy: I don’t own a telescope yet, but I plan to get one soon. In the meantime, I go to a local astronomical society public observing sessions once a month to use their telescopes. I also spend a lot of my free time watching documentaries and videos on YouTube about astrophysics and cosmology. I recently signed for a free trail at Curiosity Stream and I recommend to it to anyone who likes to watch documentaries on a wide array of subjects. I love it because it’s like watching the History channel before it started to play just crap.
Drugs: Well, I’m wrote this while high on kratom and really stoned. So, I really hope what I wrote makes sense.
There’s a lot of other things that I do for fun, but I think I covered the things that I enjoy the most.
