Video games and fishing are my two major hobbies. My daughter is old enough now that she is getting decent enough we can do both together.

I also like to drink alcohol with my friends.

I am a movie nut so watching them is a habitual thing.  I love making music/drawing/reading but haven't done any of those in some time.  I hooked up the old Playstation 2 the other day and have been playing those Katamari games again.  Those games are a blast.

Music is about as fun as it gets. Both listening to and playing/recording music.

I have a lot of fun working on synthesizer patches as well, trying to recreate classic instrument sounds like organs/pianos/horns/strings as well as trying to come up with some really strange/unique ambient sounds. There are just so many possibilities even with some cheaper synths, I've got a pretty solid analog/digital combo that covers a huge range of sounds. Just got a cheap vocoder mic for the digital synth so I can start working on some vocoder patches, kind of a synth cliche but they can be fun and used in unconventional ways.

Moog just released a remake of their vintage vocoder, sounds amazing but it's 5,000$

Moog 16-channel Vocoder Demo

Never realized exactly how vocoders work but that video explains it perfectly, really fascinating concept. Apparently Vocoders were first used in WW2 to encode speach as well, pretty crazy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocoder#History

Quote:

The development of a vocoder was started in 1928 by Bell Labs engineer Homer Dudley,[5] who was granted patents for it, US application 2,151,091 on March 21, 1939,[6] and US application 2,098,956 on Nov 16, 1937.[7]

Then, to show the speech synthesis ability of its decoder part, the Voder (Voice Operating Demonstrator, US application 2,121,142[8]), was introduced to the public at the AT&T building at the 1939–1940 New York World's Fair.[9] The Voder consisted of a switchable pair of electronic oscillator and noise generator as a sound source of pitched tone and hiss, 10-band resonator filters with variable-gain amplifiers as a vocal tract, and the manual controllers including a set of pressure-sensitive keys for filter control, and a foot pedal for pitch control of tone.[10] The filters controlled by keys convert the tone and the hiss into vowels, consonants, and inflections. This was a complex machine to operate, but a skilled operator could produce recognizable speech.[9][media 1]

Dudley's vocoder was used in the SIGSALY system, which was built by Bell Labs engineers in 1943. SIGSALY was used for encrypted high-level voice communications during World War II. The KO-6 voice coder was released in 1949 in limited quantities; it was a close approximation to the SIGSALY at 1200 bps. In 1953, KY-9 THESEUS[11] 1650 bps voice coder used solid state logic to reduce the weight to 565 pounds (256 kg) from SIGSALY's 55 tons, and in 1961 the HY-2 voice coder, a 16-channel 2400 bps system, weighted 100 pounds (45 kg) and was the last implementation of a channel vocoder in a secure speech system.[12]

That's badass man!

At one point I had an Boss RC-300 Looper. I played with that a lot, making simple beatbox and harmonica sounds.

But I really want this set-up with a synthesizer:

I like play with my 3-Channnel DJ mixer. Its really convenient when you have multiple sound sources available for music.

Reggie Watts does some cool stuff with a similar setup.

I have two Yamaha keyboards, a SK-30 synth from the late 70s and a modern keyboard that is more of a basic electric piano (NP-32). Lately I have mostly just been playing the electric piano though. The amp I was using for the SK-30 is broken.

Really wanted the RC-300 for awhile, or one of those similiar massive boss loopers. Seriously amazing but definitely a big investment  I use a boss RC-2 for mono loops and a cheap clone of the EHX 720 for stereo loops, works nicely for recording.

Using a looper with a mixer is the way to go, that way you can route any channel/audio source into the looper easily. That's how I do my recordings, makes it easy to loop keys/synth/guitar/vocals or whatever very quickly.

And I run a mono looper into a stereo looper, so I can take a short drum loop or something in mono then run it through various mono and stereo FX before looping it again in stereo

Oooh you're lucky! Yamaha makes some great stuff. Thought you said CS-30 at first though which is a pretty damn rare/expensive one. The CS80 sells for thousands, and even the CS30 goes for a few grand now. The only old SK-30 I see listed is around 1k though and there don't even seem to be any for sale. Those oldschool string synths are pretty sweet, and yamaha probably had the best reputation for them.

My analog synth is an old roland JX8P from 1985~. It has a great reputation for string sounds and pads as well. Though it also has plenty of overly 80's sounds

Very cool!

I was thinking of looking for an in-line stereo synth effects unit to play with music. Got any recommendations?

Yeah most things I've seen say they're worth about $1k. Only paid $100 for it, this guy I knew through work just wanted to get rid of it and that was the price he named. There are a few things on it that need fixing, a couple keys only work if you press hard and one of the slider things is broken off.
