Got caught hunting by angry land owner today!

So after the other days successful trip and even more rain, I decided I would head back to the same paddock to get another haul. It was all going really well as I was finding plenty of pan cyans and cubes, untill I saw someone pull up to the gate of the property. All of a sudden I'm thinking "Oh shit, here we go". The bloke opens the gate and drives over to me and I tried to play it cool and was very polite, however he was not happy at all telling me to get out in a very angry manner. He proceeded to drive to where my vehicle was parked (not on his property) as though he was getting my rego or something. I left pretty fast because I had a buttload of shrooms.
So, now I'm curious about a couple points.
1. Who has been caught before? 2. What is the general consensus when entering a property. Do you ask for permission, or risk it for the biscuit?
All in all, I did pretty well for half hours picking but i dont particularly want to go back there now which is a shame because the shrooms are plentiful.
Here are some pics of my efforts today anyway
Also, if anyone could tell me, a couple of the gold tops I found seemed to be a bit old, which is clear in the pics by the blackened tops on them. Are they still ok to eat like this or should I throw them?

Whoa, sucks that you were caught, but a nice haul regardless!
Was mushroom hunting mentioned in your conversation, either by him or you?
Any chance he has called the cops on you? I'm thinking he was probably just being protective of his property, and hopefully satisfied enough by getting you out of there.
My suggestion is that you lay low for a bit or at least try your luck in a different area, and also try to avoid trespassing. It might be a good choice to ask permission, although you can't expect people to be accommodating. But at least the worst you can get is a "no".
Where I live, it is usually not necessary to trespass to get to the mushrooms (in Norway we have a "right of way"-law to fields and pastures) but I have been approached once by a farmer who had seen me crouch and take pictures in one of his field that was just next to his horse stables - he was probably worried I was going to get in there and try to rape his horses or something - since there have actually been cases where farmers have experienced just that. In any case, I just said I was taking pictures, but left all the same since the situation was a bit uncomfortable.

Yeah it was a pretty uncomfortable moment really. The paddock is located on the road to a popular set of waterfalls and the first time I went there we ran into another picker. So I highly doubt I'm the first person to think "wow this looks like a good shroom spot". So it is possible he is sick of people roaming his land, I'm not sure.
He asked what i was doing to which i replied that i was looking for different types of mushrooms (probably not the best response but i was on the spot holding a big bag full of them hahaha) I asked if that was ok, to which he said "Nup, get out!" I was worried that he could have called the cops so that's why i got out of there ASAP.
Haha I wish it was that easy here. I would love to ask people but I get worried that most will say no as not that many people are open to letting you roam their land especially if it's for mushrooms.
Yes it's certainly uncomfortable hey!

Nice haul Dicky94,
I had a similar situation the other day with an angry land owner on her quad bike. We didn’t actually go through any gates or climb any fences. We went over a cattle grid and there was a track leading to a river crossing and there were P. cyanascens everywhere. As we were giggling like school kids and filling our bags an ol fells drive drive in and said Gday and asked what we were looking for. I replied “mushrooms” and he said yeah it’s a good time after all this rain and they will be popping up now. Fucking oath they were. He kept going. Half hour later ol love comes down on her quad bike. Long story short, it was her land and the ol fella we spoke to lived on property over the river. She wasn’t happy to say the least. Escorted us off the property, and we snuck back 10 mins later on foot to retrieve the bag of mushrooms we had hidden under a tree.
I think I might ask next time😎

Cheers Shags19,
Hahaha that's hilarious 😂 It sucks though hey. I don't get why people have to be so uptight about it. If I was a land owner and I stumbled across someone picking shrooms on my property I would most likely stop and help them bag some up lol. Mind you there probably wouldn't be any left because I would have picked it dry 😂
There was no way I could hide my bag from old mate, he snuck up on me like a cat on a bird I just stood there in front of him holding them all 😂👌
It sucks having to ask but at the end of the day, like Anglerfish said above, the worst you are going to get is a no.

That sounds quite likely. Or maybe he just wants the mushrooms for himself.
But you should in any case wave goodbye to that spot, it is as you said probably a popular hunting ground, so consider yourself lucky not being apprehended, he might go harder on the next hunter.
What you could do to potentially create some surplus is that next time you bring along some plastic containers and take some of that already colonized dung with you back home and keep them humid enough so you can get an extra flush or two in the safety and comfort of your own space.
It might even be possible to add some sort of casing and keep them going for a while, check in the Cultivation Forum for help and tips.

Haha he seemed too uptight to want the mushies. The bloke is probably oblivious to the gold growing on his land 😂
Yep I won't be back any time soon. I'm just glad the cops weren't waiting at my car when I got back to it. But it's ok because I still have a few other good locations. It seems that it would be a lot easier to grow at home but there is something so addictive about hunting them.
Oh awesome! I hadn't thought of that. Good thinking, I will definitely do that next time I'm out then and see if I can keep them going.

If forgot to add that the darkening caps of the P. cubensis in your first post are just deposits of spores, nothing to do with them being old as such.
And yes, I suggest you take spore prints of both species so you can cultivate them out-of-season, although you probably thought of that already.
For the manure collecting, you could just use a short-handled dust shovel and try keep the patties as intact as possible when you place them into the containers. It would be cool if you made a little grow log of the project, posting updates on here for us to see - and drool over.

I guess the land owner will keep an extra eye on his property now, so the risk of getting caught again is probably high and not worth the effort. Even though I'm eager enough for mushrooms, I wouldn't take a beating (or worse) to attain them.

I always ask for permission, it's way safer and productive. I mean what's the worst they can do other than say "NO".

I would actually irl not go into anyones property without an all clear from the owner BUT I can understand it happening and dont pass judgement, cos it only mushrooms, but they probably wouldnt want you to go tell all your friends that its cool to pick their feilds willy nilly and before they know it, its a free for all. SO If i were the OP maybe figure out their address and write a letter explaining why you were there and say sorry if you like and get some karma points back mebe..

Well since he's already persona non grata there, he at least hasn't got anything to lose - except if the land owner is a hard nose and chooses to report him when he eventually sees his name. But who knows, he might have just had a bad day yesterday.

Yeah look, to be honest I don't enjoy trespassing as I'm always on edge about getting caught which ended up occuring with this guy. So it really would be in the best interest of myself and the owner to get permission first.
In saying that, some people really get their knickers in a knot over such a tiny matter. The bloke needs to eat a handful of shrooms and he might have a different outlook 😂
The other thing that's hard is that sometimes there can be multiple houses around some of the best fields I've seen and I never know which one owns the land if any 🤦♂️
But I don't think I'll be back to that spot, the guy wasn't exactly giving off "you're welcome back here anytime" vibes lol.

I wouldn't be too worried about the trespassing charge. I'd be worried about the police showing up while you where picking and getting a charge related to possession of psilocybin.

if you get permission, you don't take friends without asking the owner.

I have resorted to usually hunt alone, basically because my friends who are into hunting are doing it just for the liberty caps, while I like to explore all types of different fungi and whatnot, leaving them bored and impatient. Besides, I really like the solitude and close contact with nature, hearing undiluted birdsong and buzzing of insects. It is close to perfection.

I've known farmers, and although they sure as hell look down on "hippies" collecting mushrooms, they're 100x more pissed off just by the fact that you're on their land without their permission. It'd be like someone hopping over your fence into your back yard. No one likes people on their property without their permission.
Having said that, angry farmers are a famous and classic hazard of mushroom hunting though. It's always funny to read stories about people getting caught. I've never been into mushroom hunting myself, but I always enjoy hearing funny stories about stuff like this. Or getting chased by a bull, that's another classic mushroom hunting hazard.
The farmers all know exactly what you're doing there, and they probably get a ton of other people doing the same thing too. They get real sick real fast of people coming onto their private property without permission.

Yea, I've heard state parks in Oregon are pretty bad. Where park rangers follow hippy looking individuals and arrest them when they pick. I'm actually surprised that those parks haven't tried to purposely destroy those kinds of mushroom patches to protect people from this life destroying drug.

People leaving gates open and tearing up stuff is what pisses off most of the farmers, but trespassing is definitely at the top of the list, they take that stuff personally.
