Casing experiments...
    #2647797 - 05/06/04 11:08 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

ah shit u guys... i forgot to get pictures, but here goes!....

i took 2, 1 1/2" metal cooking pans CHEAP ONES.. and made 2 casings...

1st. = 80% wet vermiculite, squeezed all water till just droplets came out, spread about 3/4 - 1" on bottom, and broke up the cakes and just plopped them into a layer ontop...

2ns. = same as above, but cased with a top layer of manure/compoust CHEAP like $2.15 for 10 lbs. about 1/4 on top of casing... NOT STERILIZED! ... and it seems to be doing good.. im going to go uncover them right now and peek.. its been 3 days. will post again..

the whole point of casing to to give a hydrating layer with no nutrients so no contams can grow. Your manure casing sould be cased with verm/coir. And your other casing should be cased on top.

excuse me, they are tinfoil pans, like $0.25 a piece... ok, the 2nd one looks great, with rizormorphic strains coming up nicely and evenly EVERYWERE... tomorrow night it will be time to put in fruiting chamber i think  ...

the 1st one is doing ok, all the lumps and balls are slowly starting to pull together making a perfect layer...

now im not the smartest mother fucker, but arent these both doing ok? i mean, am i spose to let the 1st one pull together and make a layer? and on the 2ndone, its almost time to fruit right?... when u see their little "fingers" starting to poke up through the top layer? just wondering if these are optimum times to start fruiting... ty... incase anyone is wondering, im worried about overlay, and other casing problems, AND FOR ONCE GUESS WUT? NO BACTERIA!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO... ill add to this post tomorrow yall.. night!

^^GrOwer is absolutely right! No nutrients in casing unless you want a nice overlay! Go with straight verm(sterilized)for first time attempts and you should get good results! Good Luck!

If your manure "casing layer" is completely colonized it is time to add the real casing layer of hydrated sterilized verm to the TOP of the whole thing. Make sure it is only about 1/4 the depth of the entire colonized substrate EX> 1" Substrate=1/4"casing layer.

If you put the second container into the fruiting chamber with the myc just starting to poke through you will definately get contamination since the myc will slow its growth and allow contamination to take over the uncolonized portion of the poo layer you tried to case with. Just throw that one back into the incubator until it is fully colonized and then case with verm.

In both cases you need to give the containers time to start coming through the verm casing layer before you initiate pinning.

Good Luck
MYKEY

It should be evenly poking through -- that's all. Once it's evenly poking through (no big bare spots) it's time to fruit. If there are big mats of white that's overlay.
