I've actually considered going hunting in a suit and tie, carrying a briefcase, just for the hell of it. Not that I look particularly hippie-esque to begin with, though.

I've considered a hardhat, reflective vest and clipboard in a shoulder bag with authentic looking permits for collecting invasive plants. anything that makes me look like I'm doing something other than picking mushrooms

Haha, the "official worker" trick! In my town I've actually seen junkies trying to dress like security guards, looks pretty awkward with their bended heroin knees trying to maintain their balance.

Out towards Maleny are amazing hunts. Having the paddocks on hills helps a lot!

Is it actually worth just asking for permission rather than trespassing? I was gonna try that today but felt weird driving up peoples driveways. picking in a paddock where no-one can see you feels different.

Well, you'll have to do a standard calculation of risk - percentage chance of being caught versus the consequence. If there's a 10% chance of getting caught, and the worst consequence is facing a charge of trespassing and drug possession, I'd say you're better off not trespassing.
Alternatively - if there's a 5% chance of getting permission, means a greater effort on your part, but the benefit is you can hunt without worries about getting caught, which again increases your chance of getting a higher yield as opposed to stressing the hunt having to look over your shoulder all the time.
I personally would feel less awkward to ask and get a 'no' than having to face an angry land owner, let alone a cop who's just so eager to nail you. And if you end up there, they're likely going to want to raid your home as well.
I mean, if you haven't got the guts to ask, how well can you handle a hostile confrontation?
