Does anybody have any information what kind of hardware and software is needed? And is a call center communication server a good tool for mining?
Any information would be helpful, thank you.

It won't be worth mining unless you have specific hardware
You need efficient hardware which usually is a 1050 or higher GTX graphics card.
Using old hardware will just run your electric bill higher and not return enough in value to make it worth it.
The best hardware is a mining unit specifically built for it, like an antMiner.
My Boss had several units he built himself with 5 1080 GPUs connected to it. They work great but they are an investment for sure.

So something like this thing has no practical application as a mining tool. Do you know if it has any practical application at all?

I'm a engineer at an IT firm. I replace things like this on the reg and I can tell you there's not much you can do with that aside from scrap/recycle.

Bitcoin mining is really competitive now. The only thing worth your time nowadays for mining is an ASIC unit, or Application-Specific Intregrated Circuit Chips. Like this one for example: https://m.ebay.com/itm/Bitmain-Antminer-S5-BTC-Miner-Bitcoin-ASIC-Mining-Machine-SHA256-1155GH-s-USED-/263821301813?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1
For that server, i would try sell or just scrap it

No prob. If you want to get into entry-level mining, I would recommend mining Litecoin. Its a lot easier to mine than Bitcoin due to its simplicity (hence "Lite" coin).
Theres even ASIC's made for Litecoin as well.
More info on it: https://www.litecoinpool.org/beginners-guide

Pitty, one of the major points of BitCoin was that it would be free for everyone. But then Chinese millionaire ASIC farms monopolized it.
We need a crypto algorithm that's slow and uses a wider range of cpu features while also needing a decent amount of ram. Maybe a assembly program that decrypts another one that build a large table of psuedo random numbers that are then scanned through.

As LogicaL pointed out, to mine BTC you will need to buy ASICs. Alternatively you can mine things like ETH with your GPU.
