Reishi hunt and ID request
    #26477367 - 02/09/20 06:09 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I went out today to my usual area where I know Reishi are and found a couple of cool ones.
This is the Reishi on this tree. There are several big fruits like this and on the same tree I found Lion's Mane a couple months ago.

Question: If these reishi are old like this one are they any good at all? Underside is dark and not white like the young ones.

I believe this one is artists' fungus:

Please confirm.

Same tree where the Reishi are these guys are popping out.

Kind of looks like a young artists fungus.

These yellow clusters are always present around the Reishi tree and I'm curious what they are. Spore print is very dark brown to black( Im getting prints now so will know more later). Stem is hollow and gills are attached.

Thanks everyone. Happy hunting!

To answer your other question, no reishi is not good when they're old like that and the pore surface isn't white.  Usually they'll mold right about then.

edit: and those 2nd ones do look like artist's conk, but don't listen to me.  They look too old to use as well, unless that's just shadow making the pore surface look dark.  It should be nice and white and turn light brown when you scratch it.

Ganoderma sessile is the artist conk, but I believe that other Laccate Ganoderma species are also used.
