Listerine, anyone?

Posting this for a foaf:
I just sterilized 6 PF jars which are going to sit in the PC overnight to cool to be innoculated tommorow morning. The problem is (and I realized this only after starting the sterilization) that I don't have any rubbing alcohol. I'm thinking, would it work to heat the tips until glowing, wiping with a swab in listerine, then innoculating? Or, would the jars be ok sitting in the PC all day until about 4:00 when I can use rubbing alcohol to sterilize the syringes?

Why do you need to wipe it? When I do mine I never wipe after flaming. I use my gas kitchen stove and just wait about 2 minutes and then let a drop out of the end. I just wouldnt wipe... as long as you are using a clean burning flame

you NEED to wipe... may work sometimes without it, but you gotta be safe or risk disaster for every jar innoculated with that potentially contaminated syringe....
Listerine is only what, 40-50% alcohol? its got several other active ingredients. Don't mess with it. If your a beginner don't deviate from the proven methods....
Your jars will be perfectly FINE inside the cooker until 4 tomorrow...... just wait.

I won't be able to heat the entire length of the syringe with just heat which would cause unsterile portions to get into the cake.

why can't you? you don't have a lighter? you have to apply flame AND wipe down with alcohol. There wil be black residue left over from the flame after wiping with alcohol, but it will be clean.

I still don't understand why yall are wiping the syringe. That seems like it would have more of a chance to become contaminated. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY the syringe can be contaminated if you heat it until red hot... there is no bacteria on it. I am a microbiology student and in labs we NEVER touch our innoculation loops with ANYTHING after heating until they are red hot... it seems like wiping with a towel in alchohol would introduce contams because alcohol does not kill all microorganisms. Not trying to flame anyone... just adding my take on it

I dont flame the needle at all.I just use an alchahol prep pad,and ve never had a problem. In between jars if i have to set it down,i just fold the prep pad around the needle.

you have to wipe it off because there is black residue left over that you dont want to get everywhere... and what better thing to do it with than alchohal... and who cares if your a microbiology student in labs, im sure your professor who isnt just book smart but knows his shit will tell you that rubbing with alchohal is not a harmful thing...

and yes, alchohal prep pads alone work wonders... flaming the tip once just before first use is a + though, not nescessary though...

there is no black residue if you use a clean burning flame (not a cigarette lighter) But... I just talked to my roomate who works in surgery and he told me that wiping with alchohol wouldn't hurt anything. So I stand corrected... but I wouldn't trust just alcohol.
