Question about my hygrometer
    #2647660 - 05/06/04 10:37 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I just purchased a hygrometer and I was wanting to know the accuracy of it. I purchased it from a local head shop that sells cigars. It was in the cabinet with the cigars. It is round (about the size of a silver dollar) and has a dial like a wrist watch. The only thing on it is the word hygrometer at the bottom and normal on the gauge between 50-70j%. It was about $9. They had an identical one that was larger and cost about $15. There is no brand name written anywhere on it. I put it outside today and then looked at the weather channel and results were what RH was suposed to be for the area. Is what I have any good? This is a picture of one taht looks "similar" to mine, but not exactly the same. Thanks for the help!

Do a salt test:

Place 1tsp of salt in a bottle cap (medium sized cap so all the salt will fit in).

Drip about 4 or 5 drops of distilled water onto salt (or filtered/drinking water, but distilled is best) so that it is damp - you don't want it wet... just a few drops.

Place hygrometer and bottle cap (with damp salt) in an air tight container... tupperware or a ziplock bag is fine as long as it's AIR TIGHT.

Check back in 6 hours. The hygrometer should read exactly 75%. If not, either adjust it accordingly, or just remember how far off it is (ie: if it's reading 80%, be sure to subtract 5% anytime you're checking the humidity levels.)

And you're set!

Salt is OK to test for calibration at normal levels, but for shrooms, you need humidity  80%-100%.  Unfortunately most analogue hydrometers dont measure very well in either extreme....  and a digital one usually isnt much better....  Sorry if thats not what you wanted to hear....I bought one originally then realized i didnt need it, you may not need it either..... :smoker:

I use the Calibur II Hygrometer. It's very accurate. I think the accuracy is listed in the manual as +/- 2%. On the salt test, it always registers 74% or 75%, so can't complain. It also registers up to 99% rh. Do a search on google for one.

How necessary do you guys think a hygrometer is? I was thinking about buying one, but I'm not sure.

Thats a little strong Hallucinogen .I know people that havent used one, just common sense, but I agree you should have one,but not having one doesnt mean youll fail, you just wont have the level of sucess you could have..
I think the better statement would be if you want decent results you need one.Its worth the investment.

I think you would fail since you wont know the humidity and the temp.

No you wouldnt as I said I have known people who didnt use one.The temperture was checked with a meat thermometer, which worked fine. Its not hard to tell what your humidity level is roughly at.It is better to have one without a doubt, but you will not fail without one, just not have as succesfull a grow.If your growing cakes you jaust keep the humidity as high as possable,if there is water beadiong on the sides, then your fine.Thats good enough.Casings would be trikier.

That one should work ok but,but next tme digital is the wat to go.
