Oatmeal - Celestial Cereal or the Devil's Dandruff?
    #26476424 - 02/09/20 04:53 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Few things divide our community so much, it appears, as our attraction or repulsion to oatmeal.

Some of us praise it as the healthiest cereal grain with a whopping 14% protein and 10% fiber, others despise it as a symbol of poverty and its congealing qualities.

Lets do a poll and subsequent discussion about the desirability, utility and versatility of this health food.

I eat overnight oats every morning as a preworkout snack.  I get a small container and mix a half cup of rolled oats, a little scoop of frozen berries, and just enough milk to cover the oats.  The next morning it's delicious and gives me a nice boost to carry me through a workout.

I like it - usually I'll put a fuck ton of fruit, chia seeds, some shredded coconut, and even cacao nibs in it sometimes.

I'm not a huge breakfast (or morning!) person in general though. I normally just drink a caffeinated protein shake for breakfast on the way to work.

If you don't eat a starch with that, you'll be burning lots of that protein as fuel.

You can add oatmeal to your protein shake.

Mind that lots of bodybuilders eat oatmeal.

I rarely eat oatmeal,  but I like it sweetened with brown sugar

on jan 28th I got some muesli on sale cause it expired feb 9th (shit thats today) it was on for 18 cents a box, so I got 60 boxes, it reminds me of oatmeal, I have been putting it on some yogurt I made, and feeding muesli to goats

Most muesli is 70-90% oatmeal. The oatmeal is the healthy part of the muesli, the rest is just garnish to make it taste more interesting.

Oatmeal must be packaged well as it attracts bread beetles, tiny brown critters that eat their way through paper and plastic foil.

I keep my oatmeal in a foodgrade tub.

Horses thrive on oats, its great stuff.

hmm :strokebeard:. I'm not really trying for any gainz tbh, and I have a lower TDEE as a woman. I have heard that a healthy carbohydrate along with some protein is best, though. I'll give it a try this week. Normally I just use a store bought shake, but I have chocolate protein powder so I'll try whipping something up tomorrow.

There's some interesting savory oatmeal recipes out there that I'd like to give a try too.

Nothing beats oatmeal.

I throw in a scoop of protein powder, peanut butter, and raisins. Top with brown sugar or honey.

Theres kinds of oatmeal, sounds like you got the highly processed kind.

Oatmeal as it should be is in essence crushed oats.

I have it for my pudding or supper, a couple of hours before I go to bed.

A good glug of milk.
An oz, handful or so of muesli, cooked till tender.
A half teaspoon of marmalade or Marmite if you want to be very, very English.
Half a can of rice pudding (the other half stored in the fridge for tomorrow)
cook through and, pièce de résistance, a handfull of cornflakes on top!
Voila. Bellissimo.

If I want to push the gastral boat out, I add half a chopped stewed apple to the mix.

Idk why but I think oatmeal is bad for some of us. It doesn't do me any good, so I avoid it

I start every morning with a big bowl of oatmeal.
We buy old fashioned rolled oats, they have a good texture and won't form such a congealed glue as quick/instant oats. And they cook much faster than steel cut oats.

I usually add a chopped up half of an apple, handful of raisins, flax seed meal, chia seeds, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and a dollop of molasses.

Growing up a strict vegetarian we ate a lot of oatmeal. I don't really care for it these days.

Don't hate it but don't intentionally eat it either.
