Rye grain 140 degree steep for 24 hours to hydrate
    #26472086 - 02/06/20 01:34 PM (4 years, 11 days ago)

I've been watching a ton of videos on ways people go about hydrating and preparing grains.  From no soak, to 9 hours all the way up to 4 days.  RR quotes of many more days meaning more bacteria endospores will grow and can be sanitized.

So to the point:  I have a barrel of 140 degree water from my water heater directly into a container, its got a water hose bibb flow meter, and I can see what i put in the container.  I then use the fresh mushrooms guide of 300 grams of Calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime) to soften the rye and hydrate it overnight.  24 hours.  After this, its usually actually still warm.  I guess the hdpe plastic is a really good insulator.

From here I just open the drain and let it drain, I've been pretty lazy at this point and just threw the whole damned bag in there and stabbed some holes in the bag like a savage.  The bag looks like its going to explode when I'm done, fat guy in a little coat style.

So from there I pressure cooked the bags, a couple at a time.  This led to some haphazard results which at this point I'd like to try and nail down some ideas to get the grains hydrated but not contaminate.

Last time I used 5 lb unicorn bags and multispore syringes.  So I chalked it up to multispore grossness bc even the agar was necessary to go a second and sometimes a third generation to get it real clean and pretty.

So this time I've got the syringe gun and some liquid culture.

Here is what I'm curious about:

If I endospore soak at 140 degrees, then drain.  Scoop them out into smaller bags, like the 2-3lb bags, then stack them in a pasteurizing barrel cooker for 24 hours, using a k-type thermocoupler to see they have hit and held 170 degrees F, would this work pretty well?  I'm going to add the calcium hydroxide again, and skip the gypsum since the reside from the calcium hydroxide seemed to do the trick last time.  I grew all kinds of creepy things, reds which looked like red lipstick fungus, green trichoderma, etc.  Last time I had the bags sitting open for a few days bc I'm silly and didn't think about it.  I had some much going on.  After the contamination I looked back at pictures and was like omg... wtf was I thinking.  But I made like 40 bags to try and get some kind of success.  I did and now I have some tissue cultures.

So now I'd like to do the whole process again, try liquid culture to inoculate them, and try liquid culture directly into the substate as well, and see which path I want to take in the future.

Main goal here is reducing work load.  Trying to cook all the grain and breaking it up is hard, time consuming work.  I've got a ranch full of chores and this isn't the stuff I wanna be doing the entire day, every day.  I got the lions mane to crush out made mushrooms real easy.  The p.cubensis was  little harder but once it flushed, it was steady and fun to see.  Now I'm going to try and grow some horny cheetos and see what happens.  (cordyseps militaris) that I got from mycelium emporium.  Their lions mane commercial syringe was the best thing I've played with so far.  I wish now I had shot more into liquid culture then used the syringe gun to inoculate instead of just busting the whole thing into the bags.

Does the hydrated lime cooking overnight in 140 and falling temps, then cooking in bags @ 200 until 170 internally sound good?

Thanks for all you guys out there sharing tones of info.  This place is great.

In the bags they need to hit 212F for 8 hours
Or 250F for 2 or more hours.

Internal temp

Your plan is fail.

Sounds like there's a few hole in what you're doing.

Stabbing holes in bags? Some of this I don't know what you're talking about.

Whatever chemical that is you're adding, skip it.

You sterilize grains, you dont pasturize them.

My rhy prep is literally soak overnight, bring to 200°F, strain until outside of grain is dry.

That's it..

Don't get confused by fancy words people like to use to sound smart, you're literally hydrating grains, not complicated.

You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night

I think the hydrated lime is where i put too much faith in it and led me stray.

I'm going to just try and do what I did last time but lay the grains out for a 30 minute dry out after the boil, then bag them for the pressure cooker and make sure I only prep what I can bag and cook.  Having the bags filled before the pressure cooker over 3 days seems to have been a major problem, then of course when I went to agar I saw the spore syringes were all kinds of weird other things growing.

Mycelium emporium shot me over a syringe of some lions mane that was pretty amazing actually.  That stuff was a wonderful experience.  I went straight into a coco blend and it took off like nothing else.  I'm going ot have to get them a little greenhouse setup with a fan.

Thanks for your help guys.  I think the hydrated lime kinda makes sense but it only helps the mycelium, I don't think it hardly does anything people suggest when they say it cold pasteurizes.  I think it just adds free available calicum right away and thats about it.

lol he was talking about grain prep the whole time, not steam sterilization.

OP you can just soak in room temp water for 24 hours:shrug:
Then, rinse with very hot water (so they dry quicker), lay them out on an old towel, and they’ll be ready for the PC in 30-60 min.
