First tub in a long time - is it contaminated?
    #26475586 - 02/08/20 02:14 PM (4 years, 8 days ago)

Hi,
I am new to this forum, although been playing around with growing mushrooms for some time. I had some break from it, therefore it is hard for me to get in the game again. I thought I could use your advice.

I have made couple of monotubs which one appears to have contam in it. It is rye grain inoculated with cubensis spores, 10% perlite on the bottom of the tub, 75% rye:verm medium, 15% casing mix (coir, vermi, perlite, peat moss). So I tried to pick out what appears to be a contam with a pair of tweezers - just to see either it goes deep inside the casing. The dark spot seem to be pretty shallow. When I squeezed it with tweezers it poured some of water. So I wonder - is it possible that Myc is getting out some moisture therefore some spots get darker or it is definitely a contam? Cheers for help

Im going to say, SOMETHING is off because I can see yellowing in the myc around those spots that are in question but I am not knowledgeable enough to be conclusive. The dark spots that are there because of water dropping on it, from my experience, is normal when water drops on fresh myc.

In recent experience I have found out that yellowing of the myc isnt always a sign of contam but could show that the myc is fighting off an infection of some kind.

One thing though, why did you add perlite to the bottom of a monotub? Thats completely unnecessary. And I would hesitate when it comes to squeezing the myc with tweezers, that can damage the myc and weaken it. Hope it turns out fine for you though.

Doesn't look good but it's kinda hard to see. If you removed something other than cube mycelium its probably screwed. Also next time just mix the rye with coir at a 1:2 ratio. A little verm is ok but perlite and peat moss do not belong mixed in a monotub.

Why perlite? Just an experiment of mine. I thought it could keep some moisture in, therefore provide better yeld. I am still quite a newb to this. Well, yeah, it was not wise to pull the myc with tweezers, just wanted to know either it goes inside or it just covers the top area.

Myc turns into brown/grayish color, rather would not say it is yellowing.

Thanks for your advice

You really dont see the yellowing? Maybe something wrong with my eyes atm. But I wouldn't try fixing something thats not broken, if you know what I mean. Coir Verm Gypsum work perfectly fine when mixed in proper proportions. The perlite may add a contam vector in the bottom since the perlite holds a lot of water and stagnant water is a breeding ground for bacteria. You do you bro. I hope it works out. Nothing wrong with experimenting but dont be upset when the experiment goes wrong!

In all the years i have done this, it seems that things work great until i try tweaking something to make it easier for me.

If the myc turns that color or looks that color to begin with it may be waterlogged. Just my 2 cents. Again I hope it goes great for you either way!

Thanks man! Appreciate your help.
I have separated this tub - will see how it goes. I will post an update if it survives.

Cheers!

Perlite sucks compared to coir. Also no tek tells you to do that... If you want to get good results follow a TEK exactly like it says. Save the experimentation for when you have a good grasp on growing
