DUMP these jars?? Start over?
    #26473595 - 02/07/20 09:53 AM (4 years, 10 days ago)

Help! These are half pint brf jars growing Cambodians. 26 days since inoculation. Sitting in a TiT incubator with a constant temp around 77F. Mostly but not completely dark. pf tek. There's a small fan abt 18" away blowing air across the top the top of (not toward) the incubator.

So 5 of the 6 jars are pinning, but the jar bottoms are not colonized. The sides are 95 to 100% colonized as shown. Some of the pins are growing toward the lid. The substrate on the jar bottoms appears loose.

One jar is 100% colonized and has NO pinning that I can see. It was the last one I noc'd. Hmmm.

What's going on with these and what can I do if anything? Are they a loss? Or wait it out some more? Thx.

Spawn them now ....I have NO experience with Brf but from what I’ve read sometimes they don’t colonize fully because the mycelium can’t penetrate the more solid parts of the cake(usually the bottoms/tops) sometimes this will force pinning. I’m still a Noob but this is just my take on this. Hope this helps a little.

Those tall ones can stall out.

Idk much about cakes but I remember that from when I did some.

They are probably contaminated. Mycelium will fruit in the presence of a competitor. You can try and fruit in jar, but I think with that much exposed uncolonized spawn as the mycelium shrinks it might go bad.

You can wash away the uncolonized parts of the cakes when you birth them.

I would fruit in jar and try to decrease chances, open one up and see how it smells.

I bet those jars reached about 80f in that incubator. The mycellium puts out heat so if it was 77 in the incubator the cakes were more than likely hotter allowing contams to thrive.
Ditch the incubator if you need to adjust temps adjust the temps in the room. Either turn up the thermostat or use a space heater. Id suggest keeping it 75 or under though.

I've had successful (for me at least: ~39g wet a cake) results in fruiting a near identical case.

God, why am I not making sense... If the jars are contaminated with bacteria and you fruit in jar and the sub shrinks you will get air to the bacterial area that may cause it to smell if it starts get air flow.

Looked again just now and some of the jars are showing VERY slow colonization on the jar bottoms. Only 2 jars have absolutely no growth there. One jar appears fully colonized with pins just barely showing.

So I have 2 options based on what's been said here that don't involve dumping:
1. Birth them, cut away the uncolonized parts, proceed as usual.
2. Fruit in the jar.

I'm leaning toward number 2. Thoughts?

If one was growing in a small closet, and had the door cracked with a space heater blowing the in closets direction, would that cause an contam issues?

Even if you fruit in the jar you are going to want to wash away the uncolonized part of the cake.

Sounds to me like it's probably the jar size and less likely it's a contamination. Smell test is the old thing I can think of.
