Two California IDs
    #26474265 - 02/07/20 04:57 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I found these growing out of a very old unknown tree stump. They were dry, beginning to wrinkle at the caps, viel still fully intact. Bright yellow gills. Bruising bluish green and brown on the outside. When I broke open the cap, the flesh was lilac, gills curled inwards

I've been seeing these all over growing from the dirt. They are shiny and golden, like some sort of mushroom idol. Has a volva, no sign of a viel, but was it was a bit older, so who knows...

That first one looks a whole lot like Gymnopilus thiersii except the contrast of coloring is really far from typical. Everyone is more familiar with orange Gymnopilus species but lilac is more typical of G. thiersii.
There’s a much better PDF somewhere out there but I can’t find it.

No idea on the second one.

Looks like you found yourself an Armillaria sp. and a Volvopluteus sp..

It’s the blue-green bruising that I find curious about these. Though I don’t know much about how Armillaria species typically bruise.

Same here. The bruising got way more blue over the course of an hour. This is the first time I've found a blue bruising gilled mushroom. I'm psyched! Taking spore prints now...

Here’s an example of young confirmed G. thiersii. There was also an interesting leucistic one in that bunch. The ones in this thread look similar.

1 Definitely pins of an active Gymnopileus species let them grow for another week or two so we can see color changes
2nd edit: o wait you picked em already
1st edit: very close if not same species as the ones that have been trying to kill me.
spring colors (oregon):

2 i think is an Amanita

They were beginning to shrivel, and there's not a drop of rain coming in  the sunny ten day forecast, so I think it's safe to say they were as mature as they were going to get. There were some tiny pins as well; I left those to grow.

I'm leaving California in a few weeks, so I yoinked these to take some spore prints to bring back to yooperland with me.

Is it against forum rules to say that if someone wants to PM me, I can forward them the info on the stumps exact location?
Maybe someone else in the Roseville area would be interested in visiting them a few days after the next rain. I'd love to see a pic of some mature specimens...

Gymnopilus thiersii and Volvopluteus gloiocephalus.  The Gymnopilus looks odd because it is starting to dry out - they won't look like much in a couple weeks because there's no more rain on the forecast for California.
